Michael Stewart Kearney (Mike) of Pleasant Hill, California passed away peacefully on June 12, 2022. Mike was born in Oakland, CA on May 15, 1952 to James & Jean Kearney and was the youngest of three children. He attended San Francisco's Holy Name Grammar School and Saint Ignatius High School (1970) and was a graduate of San Francisco State University.
In 1974, Mike joined the San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD). He enjoyed working in many firehouses throughout his time in the City. He rose to the rank of Assistant Chief, and retired after a rewarding 38 years with the department in 2012. In addition to his work with the SFFD, Mike also served as an officer with Wild Land Fire Training, spending many years training the staff at Camp Mather, and led numerous strike teams for wildfires in California and throughout the western United States.
Mike had many interests, all centered around his love for the outdoors. He enjoyed skiing, biking, hiking and golf. He specifically enjoyed his time at Camp Mather and at his family's cabin at the Russian River.
Mike was the loving husband to his wife of nearly 49 years, Diane. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Lance) and his two cherished grandchildren, Caleb and Mikayla. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Koller (Kerry-d), his brother Brian (Anne), his sisters-in-law Marti Brindle (Tom) and Jeanie Doherty and his many nieces and nephews.
A mass of celebration will be held on Monday, June 20th at 10:30 am at Christ the King Catholic Church, 199 Brandon Road, Pleasant Hill, CA.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the San Francisco Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation (SFFCPF) or the San Francisco's Firefighters Toy Program, Local 798, both located at 1139 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA 94103, or the Friends of Camp Mather at 35250 Mather Road, Groveland, California 95321.
