Michael Monteith Obituary

Michael S. Monteith Our beloved cousin, Godfather and friend, Michael S. Monteith, passed away on Friday, November 6th, at Stanford University Hospital. Michael was born, July 7th, 1950, in Atherton, California, to Elaine Christensen Cahill Monteith and Peter Stuart Monteith. After graduating from Woodside High School in 1968, Michael attended Claremont Mens College from which he received honors in two majors: Political Science and History in 1972. He then received his Masters degree in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 1973 and his law degree from the School of Law at the University of California, Davis in 1976. Earning his private pilot's license, Michael was never long on the ground. He loved flying both as a pilot and a passenger and achieved Alaska Airlines MVP Gold status each year as he traveled the globe. His passion for travel was matched only by his passion for politics and all things Scottish. "Uncle Mickey" as he was affectionately referred to by his God children, leaves behind a family and friends whose holidays and gatherings will never be the same without his wit, distinctive laugh, and the stories of his latest adventures from afar. Michael was proceeded in death by his parents and younger brother, Scotty. Surviving relatives include first cousins; John Vernon of McLean, VA, Susan Schouweiler of Portland, OR, Anne Conley of St. Paul, MN and second cousins; Megan Vivenzio of Friday Harbor, WA , Jennifer Rothmeyer of Seattle, WA and Courtney Tasso of La Center, WA. A celebration of life for Michael is being planned for this summer near the time of his birthday. Donations may be made in Michael's name to: Claremont McKenna College Washington Semester Program 400 North Claremont Blvd. Claremont, CA 91711

I was shocked to received a returned Xmas card today 1/28/2010 sent to Michael Monteith. Michael would have been 60 this year. I'm the Mother of his close friend, Michael Johnson. Michael M. passed a day before Michael J's birthday. Michael J. passed a day before Michael M's birthday (1996). They were known as "the two Michaels" - particularly by airline personnel, for about 10 years. I kept in touch with Michael over the past 13 years and feel so sad that NOFLYY (our main means of communication) will now be retired. See you in the next life, Michael. Love, as ever, Jan McSloy

I remember Mike ...fun, talkative,a planner and organizer, enthusiastic about the people around him and about life. My parents knew his parents, and were saddened when Mike's father suddenly died. I share their sadness now with Mike's passing.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Michael's death. He and I first met in 7th grade. My fondest memories are of a trip he and I took in a Greyhound Bus filled with young teens, chaperoned by several of our Junior High School teachers. Michael kept us laughing for miles on end. In Washington DC, he was in heaven when we had the opportunity to tour the senate in session. What an incredibly memorable summer. Blessings to you, Michael.
