Muriel Cohen Obituary

Muriel Cohen
06/18/1929 - 10/04/2025
Muriel (Mitzi) Pearl Cohen passed away at the age of 96 at her home in San Rafael, California, surrounded by many family members. Mitzi was many things to countless people, but being a mother to her six sons - Richard, Jeff, Gary, Todd, Bob, and Adam - was unquestionably her top priority. She was the rock, always providing comfort to the entire family. Her positive attitude and resilience were her way. Things were not always rosy over the last decade of her life, as she grieved the death of two of her beloved sons, Richard and Adam, her oldest and youngest.
Mitzi was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 18th, 1929, to Max and Rose Epstein. She was married to Julius Cohen on March 5th, 1951, in Miami, Florida. Mitzi traveled the world with her husband on several expeditions, including trekking to the first base camp of Mt. Everest, dog sledding in Greenland, and climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, among others. However, she remained a true New Yorker at heart.
They honeymooned in Cuba and shortly thereafter settled in Panama, where their first son, Richard, was born. Their next stop was Cincinnati, where their second and third sons, Jeff and Gary, were born. Then off to Columbus, where Todd, Bob, and Adam were born.
The family settled in Columbus, Ohio, for over 20 years. Mom loved Columbus and formed many deep friendships there, but Columbus was not their last destination. In 1976, they moved to San Francisco. Mom fought this move tooth and nail, but she eventually fell in love with the City, as she formed new friendships. Family and friends were everything to her. She connected with everyone, and they felt her authenticity and genuine interest.
A whole chapter could be written about her sense of humor. To raise six sons, you have to have it in abundance. This was a gift that was freely passed forward to all the boys.
One of the themes that Mitzi embraced was style, grace, and creativity. She made it a priority to present herself well at all times, with her hair rarely out of place and her attire always impeccable. She was an artist and always had a few projects in the works.
Mitzi was one of a kind, and this is truly the end of an Era.
Mitzi is preceded in death by her husband, Julius, and her sons, Richard and Adam. She is survived by her four sons, Jeff, Gary (Victoria), Todd, and Bob (Kathy), as well as 22 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral service on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery, located at 2500 Fifth Avenue, San Rafael, CA 94901, at 11:00 a.m. The service will take place outside. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a charity of your choice.

Mitzi and I came to Smith Ranch Homes at the same time. We were linked as being Muriel´s. Mitzi´s sense of humor was infectious. I remember her with joy .
