Nancy Ferdon Obituary

Nancy Patricia Crowell Ferdon

1925-2016

Nancy passed away in her home of 57 years on the night of July 24 after a brief illness. Nancy had lived with short term memory loss for many years, which she managed with exceptional intelligence, good humor and pluck! Ever joyful and passionately interested in others, she remained so until her very last days.
Nancy was born in San Francisco on November 3, 1925, and was the loving daughter and only child of Ila Marie Crowell and William Henry Crowell. In 1955, she married John Jay Ferdon. Jix, as she called him, died in 1994. Nancy lived in the Richmond District of San Francisco for almost her entire life. She attended St. Monica's Elementary School, St. Rose Academy, and graduated from Dominican College in San Rafael. She went on to earn a Masters Degree in Social Work at the University of California, Berkeley. After graduate school, Nancy worked in the U.S. Veteran's Hospital at Fort Miley. She continued her long career in social work for Catholic Social Services, and then for the San Francisco Department of Family and Children's Services. Nancy retired 25 years ago, and spent the remaining years of her life as a brilliant, fun-loving grandmother. Nancy was also an active parishioner at St. Monica's Church.
Nancy is survived by three children, Maggie, Tim and Anthony, and by her supremely devoted and beloved daughter-in-law, Dolores Ferdon. Dolores, wife of Tim, has been another daughter to Nancy, and has always been at her side during these last years. Nancy also leaves 8 grandchildren: Sam, Charlotte, Susannah and George Cooley; John and Danielle Ferdon; and Andrew and Zach Ferdon, as well as her daughter-in-law Betsy Ferdon, and son-in-law John Cooley.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Monica's Church at 10.00 AM on Friday, July 29. A private interment at Holy Cross Cemetery will follow. The family plans to hold a Memorial Mass to celebrate Nancy's life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Nancy's honor may be made to Catholic Charities (https://catholiccharitiessf. org/donate/) or to the charity of your choosing.

As long as I can remember the Ferdon name was often spoken in our family. When I was a little girl, while visiting my grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ferdon would enjoy dinner together while Maggy and I played. Not only did my grandfather serve on the Board of Supervisors with Mr. Ferdon, they enjoyed traveling together. As an adult, I had the pleasure of knowing Mrs. Ferdon (by then I was calling her Nancy). She and I served on the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Lawyers Wives. I so enjoyed her company whether in our knitting group or planning fundraising events. I was lucky enough to work at the San Francisco Law School when Mr. Ferdon was President of the Board of Directors. Our paths have crossed so many many times over the years. I am very sorry that I missed the service today as I just returned from out of town. My deepest condolences to all the family. Nancy was a lovely person whom I will always remember .

Nancy was a foster youth social worker when I met her thirty years ago. She worked with my foster daughter, developing important resources for her as well as always being available to her. Nancy was an extraordinary listener and motivator. She was inspiring. And when my daughter's foster years were over, Nancy remained her friend.

Nancy offered me her years of knowledge. She encouraged me. With her help, I was better prepared as a mom. She made a difference.
