Patricia Casey Obituary

Patricia Jean (O'Farrell) Casey

Patricia J. Casey passed away on September 21, 2021, in Portland, Oregon. She was 91.

Patty was born in Oakland, CA to Walter and Frances O'Farrell on March 15, 1930. She grew up in Redwood City, attending Notre Dame High School. She earned her degree in Russian History at Stanford University, and after graduation moved to San Francisco where she worked at the Asia Foundation and enjoyed her early 20's. It was in San Francisco that she met her devoted husband Edward C. "Ed" Casey. Ed and Pat raised their family in Los Altos Hills where they were devout parishioners of St. Nicholas Catholic Church. They were married for 43 wonderful years. After 69 years in California Pat moved to Portland, Oregon in 2000, enjoying every day in the Pacific Northwest.
With her huge heart, Pat formed life-long friendships with people, regardless of their age or background. When Pat asked you how you were doing, she truly wanted to know. She volunteered in her community, including participating in the Allied Arts Guild and the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, where she was President from 1985-1987. Many have memories of good times playing tennis with Pat at Fremont Hills Country Club, and later, playing golf at Stanford Golf Club and Portland Golf Club. She loved encouraging her kids and grandkids in sports -- logging countless hours cheering them on from the bleachers.
Pat was known for her intelligence, humor, and lively personality. She absolutely loved a good party and an afternoon game of bridge with friends. Then there were her piano and knitting talents and a fascination with the stock market and crossword puzzles. She was an avid reader and loved traveling to Europe and Hawaii. But most of all, Pat just loved people. A special thanks to Pat's friends and caregivers at Mirabella.
Patricia J. Casey, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother ("LaLa"), leaves behind Frances von Schlegell (John), Carolyn P. Casey, Edward C. Casey Jr. (Elizabeth), Suzanne Casey (John Pyle), Evan von Schlegell, David von Schlegell (Kristin), William von Schlegell (Kruthika), Laura von Schlegell, Meagan Casey, and her sister Barbara Hoff. She lives in our hearts forever.

Donations in Pat's memory may be made to the Evans Scholars Foundation c/o Tim Hval at The Portland Golf Club or to Catholic Relief Services.

Funeral Mass: Saturday, October 23rd, 11 am, Saint Thomas More Catholic Church, Portland, OR. A mass will also be offered for Patricia at St. Nicholas Church, Los Altos, Monday, Oct. 25th, 8am.

I was blessed to know/love her AND to be with one of her daughters last year after her passing, where we lit a candle for her in a church outside of Florence on beautiful Sunday morning. I will light a candle for her again this week in Piemonte. She is gone but not forgotten.

I had the pleasure of being in Pat's presence a few times, and once all by myself. She truly was a joy, an interesting conversationalist, and so loving and fun. I'm glad I had the privilege to know her, and love her daughter(s) - Sue and Fran - who will continue her spirit and her legacy. Rest In Peace beautiful Pat!!!!
