Paul Brady Obituary

Paul Brady
May 18, 1948 - January 18, 2023
Our beloved brother Paul Brady passed away from complications of diabetes at his home by Ocean Beach on January 18, 2023 at the age of 74. He was born on May 18, 1948, the oldest child of the late Charles A. Brady and Louise M. Brady He was a San Francisco native, born and raised in the Outer Richmond District, attending St. Thomas the Apostle Grammar School, Presidio Middle School and George Washington High School. He worked in restaurants at the beach during high school and afterwards prior to serving two years in the US Army. After returning home, he worked at restaurants in Ghirardelli Square. In his mid twenties he began his career at CalTrans working on highway maintenance in various Bay Area districts until he retired. He was a devoted and hard working crew leader.
Paul had a competitive spirit, zest for life and an often somewhat dare-devil attitude. A gifted athlete, he started golfing when he was young and continued until his passing. He was a longtime member of The Lincoln Park Golf Club and a more recent member of the Shamrock Gold Club. He was an "Old Timer" with the Dolphin Club, swimming in the Bay at Aquatic Park and playing handball. He made so many lifelong friendships with these groups. He was "up" for almost anything, sailing with his brother Jim, zip-lining through the forests in Costa Rica and making long distance motorcycle trips. He was a proud veteran and volunteered for many years after his retirement at Fort Miley VA Hospital.
Paul truly loved and valued his friends. He was kind, generous and never spoke badly about anyone. He will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his brother James Brady, sister Jean McDonagh (husband Steve McDonagh) as well as a niece, six nephews and numerous cousins. Special thanks to all who kept an eye out for Paul, especially his nephew and downstairs neighbor, Owen. All are invited to join the Family in a gathering to remember Paul at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 2, 2023, at McAvoy O'Hara Evergreen Mortuary, 4545 Geary Boulevard, San Francisco.

Like many Dolphin Club members, I can say that Paul Brady was one of my first friends I met at the club. He was so welcoming and generous. He almost had me playing handball -- but I had just gotten serious about playing the piano again, and stretching for the Moonlight Sonata had been hurting, and Paul said, yes, you should not play handball, it will hurt my hands too much. Paul also gave me some great advice as a fellow motorcyclist, not to mention as a bay swimmer. But I will always remember how often when I would be playing the piano at the Dolphin Club on a random afternoon, and upon finishing a piece, I would realize that Paul was standing, listening, at the bottom of the stairs from the men's locker room. I don't think I ever thanked Paul enough for his kind encouragement, and telling me that he truly enjoyed how members playing the piano enhanced the atmosphere of the Dolphin Club. I have never had a better response or reason for continuing to play piano than Paul's argument that it was contributing to the Dolphin Club soul. As our Handball Commissioner and friend, his judgment counts. I will feel Paul standing back, suited up, goggles and cap in hand, listening to me doing my best with Bach, Beethoven, or Pachelbel, and then hearing Paul telling me "thanks," and that he liked starting a swim listening: that will stick with me always, and I am grateful for Paul's spirit! He taught me a lot about how little things each of us do contribute greatly to community!

Paul was a very decent human being, with a wonderful and unique sense of humor. He was
always upbeat and interesting,
even when not feeling that great.
I will miss his kind presence at the
Dolphin Club, where we shared the same locker space for many years.

`There is always a time... never a good time´.

The water was a little wetter, the sun a little brighter and the laughter more sincere, when Paul was around and he will always be around for those who knew and loved him.

Paul Brady was a man who enjoyed the fellowship of many friends based on common interests and surely these friends enjoyed his kind, thoughtful, and generous spirit. Our common interest for over four decades was golf and membership in Lincoln Park Golf Club, San Francisco. I'm so grateful Paul was my friend for all these years.

I knew Paul from the Lincoln Park Golf Club. He would come visit sometimes even when he wasn't playing that day. I remember when the big tree landed on his new Audi - he took it in stride. Paul was always great to talk to and really a nice person. I will miss him.

Paul and I worked together for many years. He was very dependable and trust worthy. He was my neighbor for a short time after selling the house he grew up in. After he moved into the house near the Lower Great Highway he would give me fishing reports.
When Paul promoted to supervisor in Foster City he was a very good supervisor of a landscape crew. Paul was also on the list to become a Bridge Mainenance Supervisor. He promoted to that position in Walnut Creek not long after his promotion to Landscape Supervisor
After his retirement manybyears later Paul would help organize get together lunches with other retired Caltrans Workers where he will be greatly missed.
Paul was a good friend and a great guy. I am forever grateful to have known him and to call him my friend. Rest in Peace my Friend, I will.miss you!!

Paul was part of our class, 1962 from St. Thomas the Apostle school. One of the best athletes in our class, Paul attended all of our class reunions. I'm so glad we had such a wonderful visit just this last fall at our 60th reunion. How fortunate we were that he was part of our class. My condolences to all his family.

Paul was a great mild mannered classmate. I never remember him being angry at anyone. Not tall in stature, towered over us when playing basketball. His daredevil spirit was shown when he would ride skateboard down the road from the Legion of Honor. I feel fortunate that I was able to visit with him at the last reunion.

It is with great sadness I hear of Paul´s passing. Having worked with him for many years I can only say that he was not only a co-worker but a friend. Paul was always there for his working group when we were in a pinch. Paul would always jump in to help at all times of need despite his assigned job duties not requiring he do so. Always there! I admired that.

Paul was an athlete, organizer, sportsman and all around good guy and he will not be forgotten. His friendship and our get togethers will never be the same. RIP friend. I´ll miss you greatly.

When I first joined the Club many years ago and didn´t know anyone I can count on one hand the people who welcomed me with a big smile and bigger heart. Paul was one of them. Once when I mentioned that the water was particularly cold Paul said that he swam out to the first buoy and then realized he couldn´t breathe!

I miss this kind and friendly man who was great company at the Dolphin Club. He was part of the magic that lets us forget the daily grind and just be kids playing and having adventures in the water. I hope you are having new adventures in a brand new body Paul!
