Peter Mullins Obituary

Peter Joseph Mullins
July 23, 1947 - August 21, 2022
Peter Joseph Mullins, the "man with a plan" for the 50-acre outdoor stone garden, the Mendocino Stone Zone, passed away peacefully in San Francisco on August 21, 2022. He was 75.
Peter was born in San Francisco in 1947 to Vincent J. Mullins and Mary Louise Raggio Mullins. He grew up in Presidio Heights and graduated from George Washington High School, where he played as a star quarterback. He then went on to play college football at City College of San Francisco and also played at The University of Montana, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Peter loved playing and watching sports, and became particularly fond of basketball later in his life.
Peter spent many years working in various facets of the construction industry. In retirement, he worked on his beloved property in Gualala, CA, the "Mendocino Stone Zone", a one of a kind marvel showcasing the work of stone masons from around the world. He connected with craftsmen through the Stone Foundation and Art City in Ventura, as well as through his travels in search of unique materials. He would hold annual "builds" in which these stone masons convened to create beautiful installations throughout the property. Peter was most proud of his Fish Rock Watch Tower overlooking the Pacific Ocean, completed in 2015 using traditional old-world Irish masonry methods. He also collaborated on stone installations at the Gualala Art Center and the Point Arena Lighthouse.
Peter led a fulfilling and productive life amongst the redwoods and within the community. He worked on the property every day and took great pride in seeing his physical labor come to fruition. Peter, aka "The Unapruner", enjoyed using hardscaping mixed with strategic limb pruning and tree trimming to lift the forest canopy and create a more fire-defensive environment. He was a true patron of the arts, and although he is gone, his presence and legacy will continue.
Peter is survived by his loving daughters Genevieve and Erin, son-in-law Frank, adoring grandsons Mason and Cade, his brother Brian, niece Marian and nephews George and Thayer.

A memorial will be held in Gualala in early 2023. Please join our mailing list for updates at [email protected]. Private tours of the StoneZone are canceled at this point. A public tour is scheduled for October and will be announced.

This just popped up in my email. Is this an anniversary of his passing?
Although I only met Peter about 10 years ago, we became good friends through our love of stone. It seems his name comes up often in the stone world .

We all will miss Peter Mullins. The contributions he made to "Stone Work" will endure for centuries and will be an inspiration to future generations. The employment of stone and it's poetic use in brilliant compositions will be a lasting remembrance of his contribution to the times he lived through.

Hi my name is Tina, and I´m a local to the Mendocino Coast. I met Peter as I´ve been a bartender and server for almost all my life. I met him through my good friend Gem Who he bought his beautiful property from. I always felt as if I had a friend in Peter and someone I could depend on if I needed to ask for help. I never did have to ask for help but I always felt like he would help me if I needed it. My favorite memory of Peter is about 20 to 30 years ago in the GualalA Hotel. I was bartending to a packed bar, and into the back door comes peter he proceeded to jump on the bar which was completely full, and shouting out as he walked down the bar James Brown is dead James Brown is dead . He then jumped down off the bar and proceeded to exit through the front door. He was quite a guy that guy I´m gonna miss him I miss him right now thank you for letting me share, Tina

RIP , Peter, you're a good man. I had the pleasure of meeting Peter around 2007 and we instantly bonded by our love of traditional stonework. I'm proud to say I've been to his beautiful Gualala property and assisted with a number of his stone builds.

The world has lost a kind and generous person. Although I only met Peter a few times, I felt him warm, patience and dedication to stone craft immediately and deeply. He is and will be missed greatly. May we find a way to carry on his legacy.

I met Peter through the Nursery I worked at"the Growing Concern"..
Many phone calls for us to find dozens of Native plants for his property a year before we actually met face to face. He became a good friend and he will be missed...

Having known Peter and Brian for over 50 years, I would like to add a few things to Peter's memory.
Peter was crazy about the blues and followed every move of Johny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughn. His latest favorite station was the Tom Petty channel. Another interest of Peters has always been politics. He followed the evolving leadership with a biting sense of humor. I haven't seen Peter since I sold him my place twenty years ago. I know its magnificent and he has sent photos and told me all about it. I will remember him more for Peter than for anything he left behind. My condolence for all his family.
