Phyllis Nelson Obituary

NELSON, Phyllis Margaret - Died peacefully on July 31, 2005 after suffering a stroke. She had just turned 87 on July 19. Phyl was the light of her husband, Norm's, life and her daughter, Denise's, best friend. She also leaves her son-in-law, Paul Harrison, and her "grand-dog," Dash. She will be remembered by all who knew her for her kind and caring nature. Phyl met Norm in 1939 on a "Snowball Express" train which brought skiers from Oakland to the Sierras. They loved each other from the moment they met and were engaged within two weeks. They would have been married 65 years on August 17. After 12 years, Denise was born. The three were very fortunate in sharing many wonderful times, friendships and travels together. Phyl was known for her love of animals and nature. Her genuine concern for others was apparent to all who knew her. She loved life to the utmost, and tried to make people feel good, including strangers. She was always beautifully dressed, and looked much younger than her age. A movie buff all her life, Phyl could recognize all the actors and actresses in classic films of the '30s, '40s and '50s. She made the best Caesar salad - her specialty - and enjoyed her martinis with "just one olive." Phyl left the world a better place. She will live on in those who knew her. At her request, there will be no formal funeral service. Donations may be made in her memory to the SF SPCA or the Nature Conservancy.
