R. Heinrichs Obituary

R. Stephen Heinrichs

R. Stephen (Steve) Heinrichs, Porsche historian and private investor, died on September 4 after a long illness. He was 69.

Steve was born on February 6, 1947, in Fresno, the only child of Pauline and Richard Heinrichs, grew up in Reedley, and graduated from Reedley High School. In his early 20s, he bought his first Porsche, which led to a lifetime love of the car and its history, and his close association with the Porsche factory and headquarters in Germany. In 2004, Steve organized a 50th anniversary celebration of the Speedster in Carmel, California, bringing together Speedsters and their owners from all over the world for a once-in-a-lifetime event. He later co-organized another Porsche gala as a fundraiser for lung cancer. Steve was instrumental in producing two meticulously researched books about the Speedster and coauthored an authoritative volume about the Porsche 4-cam motor and the early years of Porsche motorsports.

As an undergrad at Fresno State, where he earned a B.A. in accounting, Steve joined the Sigma Chi fraternity, and developed a close relationship with the fraternity on both the national and local levels that lasted his lifetime. He served for a number of years on Sigma Chi's Leadership Training Board, on the international fraternity's executive committee, and was elected to the office of International Treasurer (Grand Quaestor). Because of his integrity, Steve never waivered from what the fraternity stood for.

Steve's professional life as a CPA took him from partner at Arthur Anderson to executive positions at private companies, including Teknekron and Tenera. He served on the board of directors of several companies and nonprofits, including PDF Solutions, the Capuchin Franciscan finance board, and the Board of Governors at California State University, Fresno.

Above all, Steve was an exemplary husband, father, and friend, a strong individual of conviction and curiosity. He was a clear and insightful thinker with a dry and piercing wit. Steve was a connoisseur of fine wine, rooted for the 49ers, and was especially proud of his boyhood years as an Eagle Scout.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Dorothy; his two sons, Jamie and Dan; his daughter-in-law, Shannon; three grandchildren, Erin, Kylie, and Vance; and numerous friends and relatives.

A memorial service will be held at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Burlingame, California, at 11 a.m. on October 8.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the lung Cancer Society, The Capuchin Franciscans 1345 Cortez Ave, Burlingame, Ca. 94010 or a charity of your choice.

Remembering all the great things that we contributed and achieved working together Steve. It was a wonderful collaboration my friend. The Porsche Carrera 4 Cam Book has become a high mark and standard in the Porsche history and records world. You and your friend and co-author, Rolf Sprenger, who recently passed, will not be forgotten. May you both Rest In Peace.

Steve was what all men should aspire to, curious, focused, kind, involved, and one who used his good fortune to positive ends and to leave this world a better place for his having passed through it. I think of him often, and try my best to follow his example.

My cousin Steve was like the big brother I never had- Although we did not see each other often I could always count on him for solid advice and counsel. He will be missed very much! (Photo is 1950s egghunt at Grandma Heinrichs' in Reedley, CA)

Steve should be remembered for his tremendous contributions to the body of knowledge regarding the Porsche 356 and Carrera. He amassed a significant collection and he always made time to provide helpful information to those of us who are fortunate to own these wonderful cars.

The other part of his life saw him make significant contributions to cancer research while at the same time waging his own fight against it.

He'll be missed.

Condolences to Dorothy and the Family. I was fortunate to get to know Steve over many years. I'm glad to say he was a friend.
I was able to attend the two great events he organized. He was very helpful in assisting me in establishing the race history of my Speedster. He was a great author and researcher of the Porsche marque and his efforts will certainly live on forever.

My condolences to Dorothy and the rest of Steve's family. Only Steve could produce the Speedster 50th Anniversary Event and the Porsche Race Car Classic. His pursuit of the facts and attention to detail have earned him a place in the pantheon of Porsche historians. Thank you for your friendship and trust. May you rest in peace.

A great friend and teacher to me about life in general. His convictions were honest and real but often differing from mine. As his illnesses progressed, I would tell Steve that I would think good thoughts and best wishes to him silently, every day. He would have to admit that those were "almost" as good as prayers, as "it's the thought that counts." Now, I extend good thoughts and condolences to his family and other friends. Steve will be missed.

I was very fortunate to know Steve and to have him call me "friend" - if only for the last 4 1/2 years of his remarkable life. He was a man of remarkable integrity - truly everything an Eagle Scout exemplifies.

So very sorry to hear this news. Steve was a knowledgeable and dedicated Porsche historian. He taught me a lot about vintage Porsche race cars, and I always think of him (and Rich) when I see one out on the road! Sincere sympathy to Dorothy and all his family and friends.
