A Native Son of the Golden West, born in San Francisco, CA, Ray Picone passed peacefully at his home with his wife Sonia, family, and friends by his side on Veteran's Day November 11, 2013. Ray never gave up! Even after a diagnosis of congestive heart failure he enjoyed his life to the fullest. At a young age Ray moved to his beloved Aunt Marion (Babe) & Uncle Angelo (Al) Spadoni's home in Burlingame, CA where he became part of the Spadoni family. There he shared a loving family relationship with his cousins Kenneth, Judith, Robert, Marian & Suzanne Spadoni. After graduating form Serra High School in San Mateo Ray married Sonia Pellegrini and became a concrete contractor, learning the trade from his father-in-law Mario Pellegrini and in partnership with his brother-in-law Ivano Pellegrini under the name of United Concrete Co. Ray continued the cement business as Picone Concrete Construction until his retirement in 2003. Ray always had a giving heart, donating his time at Highlanders Little League as President for 4 years, President of the Booster Club at Woodside High School for 3 years, donating his expertise and labor at St. Pius Catholic Church pouring concrete for the senior center and rectory. In addition Ray was a volunteer at the Sequoia YMCA and member of the Dirty Dozen a group that raised funds for kids camp at the Sequoia Y. Ray was an avid sportsman for 50 years and in his retirement he enjoyed game hunting and mushroom hunting along with woodcarving, pen turning, stained glass work, glass blowing, painting, and working out at the Sequoia Y.
Ray dubbed "The Rough and Tough Creampuff" will be greatly missed by his wife Sonia Pellegrini Picone, together for 50 years, and by his daughter Charmaine Picone McCrystal and son-in-law Eric McCrystal, son Michael Angelo Picone and daughter-in-law Samantha Kaye Picone, and his four grandchildren, who Ray was so proud of, Gianna and Sean McCrystal, Mason and Sierra Picone, his Lab Siena, and numerous family and friends.
A memorial mass & Celebration of Ray's Life will be held at St. Pius Catholic Church 1100 Woodside Road, Saturday, December 14, 10AM. In lieu of flowers please send a donation to the Sequoia YMCA, 1445 Hudson Street, Redwood City, CA 94061 in the memory of Ray Picone.
