Raymond Solari Obituary

Raymond Solari
February 13, 1928 - March 17, 2023
Raymond Solari passed away peacefully on March 17, 2023. His great heart finally gave out just before midnight, and he's gone on to his next Big Game. Born February 13, 1928 in San Francisco, he was the son of Antonio and Vittoria Solari, immigrants from northern Italy.
From earliest childhood, his dream was to play football at Cal and beat Stanford, a goal he accomplished in robust fashion. After graduation from Galileo High School, he went on to play guard and linebacker at Cal under the legendary Pappy Waldorf; the team played in three Rose Bowls. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns and traded to the San Francisco 49ers, whose doctors advised that he not play because of a back injury. He returned to Cal and earned a teaching credential, serving as a graduate coaching assistant under Pappy Waldorf. In 1952, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to Korea, where he organized recreational programs, taught English grammar to NCOs, and ran the library.
In 1954, he accepted a teaching and coaching position at South Pasadena High School, where he eventually led the Tigers to five Rio Hondo League championships, four CIF championships, and a perfect season in 1969. In 1972, he returned to Northern California to coach the Menlo College Oaks, overseeing the team's transition from a junior college program into an NCAA division III program in 1986. In 1999, SPHS named him Coach of the Century and named its football stadium after him, a measure of the degree to which he influenced the lives of young men. His unique coaching style combined strict discipline, quirky humor, and compassion. He was much loved.
In retirement, he and his wife Constance traveled frequently to Italy and Kauai. They were long-time subscribers to the San Francisco Symphony, and for over forty years they hosted literary and artistic salons in their Menlo Park home. He was also founder and head of the Zot Party, a group of friends from across the political spectrum who gathered quarterly to discuss politics-luncheons informed by spirited debate and civility.
Above all things, Raymond was a man devoted to his family-a loving husband and dedicated father whose most recent years were brightened by the presence of four glorious grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Constance Hines Solari; his children, Robin Solari, Antonia Solari Moran (Robert), and Christopher Solari (Jennifer); and four grandchildren, Arthur, Harrison and Aiden Moran, and Violet Solari. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the San Francisco Symphony, U.C. Berkeley or an organization of your choice.

I am 78, and I remember Coach Solari from my experience as Assistant Manager (AKA water boy) during his 1962 CIF championship season at South Pasadena High School. As we all know, he was a great football coach, but, even more importantly, he was a great teacher of character for boys learning to be men. There were no stars on our team. In order for us to defeat larger, heavier teams from traditional football powerhouses, we had to learn teamwork and discipline. Coach Solari was the perfect man for that job. We will all miss him.

My deepest condolences to Connie and the rest of the Solari family. Coach Solari was such an important figure in my life when I needed one the most. I find it interesting how many times I would think of him in challenging parts of my life and the answers that came with those thoughts boiled the moment down to just doing the right thing and treating people how I would want to be treated. I gained so much from Ray and feel like I was the winner in our relationship. I had to deal with a lot of tragedy in those days of my life and Ray always made me feel loved and supported, even after missing a block or two. My biggest regret was not staying close with Coach as life moved on. I always felt there was time to reconnect and thank GOD, we had that chance last fall over the phone. My second regret was not gaining any yardage on the guard pull hand off! Coach I am sorry! I could see the end zone until I couldn't.

I had the honor to play football for Coach Solari at both SPHS and Menlo College for a total of five years. He was instrumental in my growth as a player and young man. Great coach, teacher, and human being. The world was a better place with him in it. Rest in peace.

I had the honor of playing for Coach Solari at So. Pas on the team that won his first CIF championship. We were successful because coach instilled in us the importance of teamwork, preparation, hard work, sportsmanship and determination to succeed-all important to living successful lives later. All of us on those teams are grateful for the important role coach played in molding us into the men we became. My condolences to the Solari family for the loss of a wonderful person.

He was my driver´s Ed teacher and gym teacher at SPHS. I loved him so much I joined his "animal class" which was the gym class for disabled weirdos. I didn´t care who was in there as long as I got the benefit of being around Coach Solari! He was the only thing I liked about high school!

Coach Solari had a huge impact on me in college. He was tough and fair, and always made sure we were prepared. And we won a lot of games. Connie, Thank you for sharing Coach. He found a wonderful partner! You are the best. I think of Coach Solari all the time. I know he is up in heaven getting ready for the next game....and setting his watch back every few minutes until we run the play perfectly. Zot!!!!
