Better later than never, right? (I could have sworn I wrote something here as soon as I learned we'd lost Mr. Friedling.)
If I had a dime for each moment, these past 9 years, that I've thought, "I've got to see what Rick thinks of this", the world would accuse me of hoarding its dimes. Only my dear friend Rick -- who I insisted on addressing as "Ubernebbish" (with only slight protest from him) -- would have printed business cards for his cat (Naomi Friedling, Feline American). Or seriously pondered opening a firm called "I Can't Believe It's A Law Firm". Or actually distributing a memo among our classmates, entitled, "Golden Gate's Loss of Accreditation: What It Means For You". We put animal snouts on the former deans' portraits before the visit from the accreditation team (and little stickers on the bottom of the frames, not so subtly hinting that they were rentals that must be returned on time in order not to lost the deposit). As our homage to John Cleese, we altered the reader board at the library entrance, in the style of the vandals who perpetually mangled the Fawlty Towers sign. Master Friedling knew history, ships, planes, law, humor, cats and what-all (and alas, guns as well) . . . and he could doodle like Da Vinci. He and I were an unbeatable team that made the Back Bench not only respectable, but The Place To Be.
I took a long hiatus from the law, and let myself lose touch with Rick. Sadly, I didn't want to deal with his obsessive resentments (of his bosses, of the State Bar, of Cruel Fate) . . . but usually, Rick was RIGHT about those nemeses of his, and I was a lazy, inattentive coward who didn't stick with my friend as I should have. I abandoned him, and I'm forever sorry.
I truly love you, buddy, and I miss you terribly, every day. (I do most things very well, as you know, Rick, but this one I do terribly.)

I am shocked and saddened, made worse by the fact that I will be in San Francisco tomorrow night. Rick was my best friend for do many years, even after he went "quiet". We shared so much and his innate caring, gentleness and kindness were so wonderful. I was with him though much of his ups and downs until the past few years when I struggled to track him down. He was a rare talent a lovely person and it will take long time for my heart to heal.

Rick, great friend always able to help in an emergency, I'll never see a film noir movie or To Kill a Mockingbird without thinking of you. You are missed

I'm glad we were able to be with his friends and family at Fort Point. He was such a gifted speaker and fine fellow too.

Though he signed my autograph book in the 70's at Camp Swig (I was a camper, he was a counselor), I didn't realize we had met then until 2003, a year after what I thought was our first meeting in SF in 2002....our "reunion" of sorts was meant to be. We became good friends, and I have many good memories from the past ten years including him bringing me his own whole turkey when he heard I didn't get any on one Thanksgiving. I will not forget you Rick.

Almost twins we were, and now I will miss you. Even though we didn't see each other for a long time. My brother Rick. We traveled the world together. I miss you.
