Richard Marquez Obituary

Richard D. Marquez, Sr.

Richard D. Marquez, Sr., 69, passed away on Jan. 9, 2014 at his home in Gardnerville, NV with his wife, Mary, six of his children, and two of his grandsons lovingly by his side. Rich was born in San Francisco on Feb 8, 1944 to the late Manuel Jr. and Mary Marquez. He is survived by his brother, Manuel; sisters, Roseanne and Marie; his children, Richard II, Christina, Sonia, Elisa, Ivan, Julie, Des, Eva, and Anna; thirteen grandchildren; and his great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his brother, Robert Sr. Rich was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War. In 1986, he opened his first of three SF bars, 3rd Street Station. He owned Rich's Place with his former wife, Julia and his son, Rich Jr., and owned Rich's Club 93. In NV, he owned Rich's Highway Club. Rich sat on the board of the SF Tavern Pool League. He sponsored and played on multiple teams, winning city and state championships. He helped organize one of the sport's first professional televised tournaments. To all that knew him, he was a vibrant, charismatic character with stories to share and ruckus to stir. Whether family or friend, Rich left us all with memories that live on. A memorial service will be held on his birthday, Feb. 8th at 11am at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1025 Masonic Ave, San Francisco. A memorial pool tournament will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in his honor to the SF VA Medical Center.

Passed through SF in the early 90’s and spent a couple of years playing out of Rich’s Place. Rich left a lasting memory and I have looked back at many wonderful times playing pool at his bar and for his teams. He was a wonderful guy who reached out to an Australian looking for a home.

Sadly missed by his family and those who he touched like me.

RIP
