Robert Burke Obituary

Robert "Bobby," Burke A native of Sonoma County, was called home on June 10, 2010 at the age of 63. Born Robert Louis Burke on February 10, 1947 in Santa Rosa to the late Robert Patrick Burke and the late Mary Louise (Lacabanne) Burke. Bob was the eldest of three children and was preceded in death by a younger sister, Janis Marie Burke. He is survived by his youngest and adoring sister, Linda Louise Burke (Claude "Ted" Schroeder) as well as numerous and much-loved aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Bob attended St John the Baptist Catholic School in Healdsburg, Analy High School and Santa Rosa high School from which he graduated. He also attended Santa Rosa Junior College. Bobby co-owned, with his sister Linda, Burke's Canoe Trips in Forestville, a four-acre river resort founded by his parents in the late 1940's. This year, the Burke Family is looking forward to celebrating 60 years of service on the Russian River. Bob and Linda worked closely together in the family business, and Bob played a vital and active role in the ownership and operation of Burke's Canoe Trips. He derived enormous satisfaction in seeing so many people enjoy the beautiful Russian River, a river he so dearly loved. Linda will continue bringing this joy to others in future years. Described by close friend, Barbara Gonnella, as an "exquisite humanitarian," Bob found his greatest joy and satisfaction through his foundation: "Bob Burke's Kids' Program," a non-profit service for children with cancer or life threatening illnesses and challenges. Bob Burke's Kids' was launched in 1974 with a Russian River style fishing party for 18 children. That evening, over the years, developed into a program which provides year-round fun activities for all Bob's "Kids" and their families with dinners and entertainment every Wednesday evening during the summer months, and monthly seasonal parties at the Union Hotel in Occidental during the fall and winter months. Along with the dinners, other activities such as a bowling night, river canoeing and fishing trips provided the fun times that Bobby knew helped to lighten the burdens and responsibilities that these families were experiencing. Bob's deep devotion to his Catholic faith was always present at every function, with traditional Mass and Communion presided over by the priests who had become his life-long friends. Bob's involvement and volunteerism was never limited to just his own community. He was an early advocate and supporter of the Hospice movement in the 1970's, Sonoma County children's Cancer Foundation, the heart of America Bone Marrow Project, and many other charitable organizations and foundations. Always a humble man, Bob never sought publicity or accolades; yet on June 30, 2010, Bob Burke is to be honored by the Disability Services and Legal Center as the 2010 recipient of the "Independent Living Legacy Award" for over 30 years of providing his "Kids" the opportunity "to be children, to have a blast, to smile, to laugh, and to enjoy life." Family and friends are invited to attend an evening Vigil Rosary Service on Monday, June 21, 2010 at 7:00 PM at St. Rose Catholic Church, 398 Tenth St., Santa Rosa, CA 95401. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at 10:00 AM at St. Rose Catholic Church. On Monday, June 21, 2010, there will be a visitation held from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM at Daniels Chapel of the Roses, 1225 Sonoma Avenue, Santa Rosa. In lieu of flowers, his sister Linda encourages contributions be made to Bob Burke's Kids' Program - WCCS, P.O. Box 602, Forestville, CA 95436. Linda will lovingly carry on Bob's devotion to his "Kids" and his foundation to honor her beloved brother.

So much more than just a bus driver! Bob was always the one to share a good joke with us as soon as we saw him.

We began camping at Burke's in the 60's with Bob Sr., Marilou, Grandma & good old Montana greeting us warmly.

Eventually Bob & Linda took over, but the love and friendship never wavered. Not once in our 40+ years did we ever feel unwelcome.

We could fill this Guest Book with stories: the Grapevine area, the hat in the tree that survived numerous floods, and the adventurous river trips.

However, we will only say, "Thank you Bob, you will be missed."

Love,

Tim & Margie Rognlien & families

Bob was an amazing, incredible man. Tony and I come up three times a year. Everytime we leave he makes sure to try to get Tony to stay. "Why go home and leave this beautiful place?". When we arrive home there would be a message from a "highway patrol officer" saying that we were caught doing 100 miles an hour on 101...Bob will live forever in the hearts and minds that knew him. Truly a blessed man.

Linda, I am so sad to hear the news about Bob. He was a great man and did so many things for kids in our community. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten. The Russian River was greatly blessed and honored just by his presence here and we were lucky to know him. Take care,

I remember Bobby as a kind person with sense of humor. He always had a smile on his face. His work with children with cancer was admirable and not surprising to me.

I met Bobby in the 1970's. What a gentleman he was. We actually dated for a time. We used to have a lot of fun together at Burke's with Keith Buckman and his kids, my sister Peggy and Bobby and I. My daughter at the time was around 1 yr. old. He was so good with her. She is now 39. I used to have a picture of him feeding her, her baby bottle. Not sure if he kept the picture or I still have it somewhere. I had been thinking of Bobby recently and could kick myself that I didn't take the time to go visit with him. He was so funny and caring. I'll really miss him. I'm so sorry for the loss of your brother, Linda.

So many angels in heaven, now one less here on earth. Bob was such a kind, selfless, loving man to many, and he will be missed by all! May he watch over all of his family, his "kids", overwhelmed with joy, knowing he has influenced the lives of others to carry on his passion and dedication to keep them smiling!

Linda, you and the rest of the family are in my thoughts and prayers. Bobby was a wonderful man, and was always there when our family needed him. The Lord got himself a real angel when he took Bobby. It's times like this that I wish I did not live so far away. But we do have so many great memories. Love to you my friend.

Linda:
I am so saddened on the loss of your brother whose smiling face picture is still in my cell phone camera from my stop at your 'canoe counter' last summer. I was happy to see him and Bob took the time to visit with me as we remembered happy times spent during the late 1950's into the 60's when our family camped annually at Mirabel Park. All who knew your family, whether they lived at the River or were just summer visitors such as myself, have memories of that time growing up: pinball/juke box arcade * cafe * cocktail lounge * roller rink * movies shown outside on the deck at night * the music of that time * our teenage summer loves. Bob was right there with us - at your family's resort that gave us memories which have endured during our lifetime...they were great times. Thank you for your writing on his life which was clearly a labor of love...his humanitarian efforts which I was not aware of as we are way down here in the SF Bay Area. Know that we spoke of Bob and your family, our Russian River memories, often. May he rest in peace, God bless...he was a kind and gentle soul.

Our deepest heartfelt sympathy to the Burke Family, extended family, friends, and Bob Burke's Kids. Bobby was the sweetest and most generous soul you ever met. He always welcomed us at Burke's with a smile and a funny anecdote, invited us to his bbqs and events, and always made sure everyone was happy. He touched the lives of many people in a special way and we will miss him dearly.
