Robert Granucci Obituary

Robert "Bob" Granucci
02/05/1933 - 01/14/2026
On January 14, 2026, Robert Granucci died peacefully in San Francisco after a long illness. Robert was born on February 5, 1933 in San Francisco. His parents were Elmo and Marian Granucci.
Robert attended the University of San Francisco as an undergraduate and then studied law at Stanford University, and became an attorney in 1958. He worked for the California Department of Justice and was a Deputy Attorney General for many years, specializing in appellate law. He argued a significant number of cases before the California Supreme Court and multiple cases before the United States Supreme Court, including Stone v. Powell.
In 1962 he married Muriel Coffey and thereafter raised a family as the father of David and John Granucci, the grandfather of Theresa and Peter Granucci and the father -in-law of Paula Granucci. Over the years he committed much time and energy to Church and community services. He served as a volunteer assisting the sick on multiple pilgrimages to Lourdes and was a devoted member of the Knights of Malta. He was also a dedicated member of St Cecilia's Parish.
In his later years Robert was able to engage in his passions of duck hunting, competitive shooting, and writing. He loved the outdoors and was frequently accompanied by Muriel on many expeditions. Robert combined to an extraordinary degree the qualities of a sharp intellect, quick wit, personal dignity, friendliness, a deep religious faith, generosity and sincerity. He will surely be missed.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 2555 17th Ave. in San Francisco, on Tuesday January 27, 2026 at 11:30 am. He will be laid to rest with his beloved Muriel at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma.

Dedication, Competence, and Loyalty are virtues that describe the many qualities of Bob Granucci. Bob was a yearly retreatant on the Legal Profession Retreat at El Retiro, Los Altos. Bob was solid in his Catholic faith and Jesuit Education that made him an inspiration to many. May Bob rest in the eternal embrace of our loving God.

I got to know Bob through the Knights of Malta. On one of our trips to Lourdes, he had returned to the bus early, and I shortly thereafter. I sat down next to him and we had the first of our many wonderful conversations over the next 9 years. I was at the University of Southern California and was building a research Institute at USC designed to serve the intellectual and spiritual apostolates of the Catholic Church worldwide. He loved the idea and funded a fellowship in honor of John Henry Newman, not saint and doctor of the Church. We had many conversations at his home in San Francisco and often walked to a nearby neighborhood Italian restaurant for dinner. Robert was a lovely, smart, generous, deeply thoughtful man of the Church and the law. May he rest in peace! James Heft, S.M.

My name is also Robert Granucci. I am a Retired attorney and cousin to the deceased
I followed his career for years and as a young attorney often asked how I could have a practice of law in Sacramento and work at the same time for the Attorney Generals office.

Bob's name was on every Appellate brief I saw filed from the Attorney General's Office for decades. He had a great reputation. Hope he is enjoying meeting the lawyer saints in heaven.

In gratitude for the life of Mr Granucci, a true Catholic gentleman. "Blessed are they who die in the Lord. May they rest in the Lord, for their good works go with them." Rev 14:13. Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine.

I met Bob more than 45 years ago when I was a student at USF Law School and he was a terrific Moot Court Judge. At the time I only had an inkling of his intellectual prowess, but over time I came to regard him as a lion the (appelate) court room. His record speaks for itself. It was always a pleasure to see Bob at St. Thomas More Society events and, later, through the Order of Malta. I will miss him.
