Robert Harmon Obituary

Robert Lee Harmon

Robert "Bob" Harmon passed away on Monday, December 18th, 2017, in Kentfield, California at the age of eighty-seven. Bob will be forever in the hearts of his wife, Meg; his ex-wife Ginger; his four children: Grant (his wife Linda); Mark (his wife Kimberley); Cristina; Tim (his wife Stacy); and his seven grandchildren: Hailey, Elizabeth, Trevor, Henry, Justin, Blake and Giselle.

Born and raised in Bakersfield, California with modest means by his single mother Dorothy after the untimely death of his father, Bob developed the character as a young man which he would demonstrate throughout his life. In those early years, Bob worked hard in school, sports and in many part time jobs to support himself. He always showed great optimism, energy and was gracious and generous to others.

Bob attended the local public schools in Bakersfield. In high school, he gained the admiration and trust of his fellow student body to be elected Student Body President. He went on to be elected Boy Governor of California from the delegation of the 1947 Boy's State Convention in Sacramento, California.

Bob's education continued at Stanford University, where he earned three varsity letters in wrestling and graduated with high honors. Bob then attended Stanford Law School, and while studying law he served as coach of the Stanford Wrestling Team. Bob also received a diploma in law from Oxford University, which he attended as a Stanford Scholar.

Bob started his law career at the law firm of Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C., before returning to his native California to practice law as a partner at Graham & James in San Francisco. In 1970, he decided to devote his business career to real estate development, and he would create the business enterprises, resorts and restaurants, using his creative and entrepreneurial talents, for which he will be forever known and remembered.

Bob took his discerning eye to pioneer the development of award winning resort real estate in the West and Hawaii. His first endeavors included the Tahoe Tavern at Lake Tahoe, which was awarded the Certificate of Excellence from the State of California; Chinquapin and Cedar Point at Lake Tahoe, and Kiahuna Plantation on the Island of Kauai.

As Bob's success in real estate development grew, he founded the iconic restaurant and hotel in Napa Valley, Auberge du Soleil, with his dear friend Claude Rouas. In 1981, Rouas opened the famed restaurant on the property, pioneering the innovative and extraordinary dining experiences of the Napa Valley. Bob soon after developed the Auberge du Soleil property, to include fifty ultra-luxury hotel guest cottages, a world renowned spa and its signature style of guest service: relaxed yet sophisticated. The Auberge du Soleil became, and still is, one of the most highly regarded and critically acclaimed small luxury hotels in the world.

In 1984, Bob founded, again with his friend Claude Rouas, Piatti Restaurant Company to create a popular Italian restaurant concept first in Napa Valley, and then expanding over the years throughout California, Washington, Colorado, and Texas.

In 1998, Bob founded and served for many years as Chairman of Auberge Resorts, which provides management expertise and delivers the highest standards of excellence for small luxury hotels across the globe. Auberge Resorts Collection today is internationally recognized as one of the top hotel brands in the world.

In addition to his passion for gracious hospitality, Bob loved Porsche automobiles, which led him to a successful amateur race car driving career. In 1968, his first year of racing, he won the inaugural endurance race at Sears Point Raceway, now Sonoma Raceway. For several years following, he drove competitively as an amateur in professional races at Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen, Daytona, Sebring, and Le Mans.

Bob's compassion and concern for others was demonstrated in his political endeavors. Bob was an active leader in the Democratic Party, serving as a member of many local, state, and national Democratic Campaign Committees. In 1968 and 1972, Bob was elected and served as a California Delegate to the Democratic National Presidential Convention.

Bob will be forever remembered by his family, close friends, colleagues, and people he touched through his love, enthusiasm and energy, as a kind, considerate, and compassionate man. He saw the best in each and every person. And as a result he brought out the best in everyone around him. Bob was fair, thoughtful, and unconditionally generous to all. Above all else, Bob loved his family. He inspired his family and so many others with his magnanimous and always considerate and thoughtful character.

In remembrance of our beloved Bob, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, gifts can be made in his honor to the Napa Valley Community Disaster Relief Fund to benefit the victims of the Northern California Wildfires.

I just learned of Mr. Harmons passing. I had the privilege of working at his Auberge property In San Martin. I often had the opportunity to interact and learn from Bob. Never has there been a more gracious and professional man. He always had time for his employees and to lead by his example. Iam truly saddened at his passing and would like to express my most sincere condolences to his family. I am confident that heaven found him a fast car and a finely set table. RIP Bob.

Dear Meg,
Bob certainly had a big impact on Dick and I. Dick worked for his real estate firm, sold at all of his properties and was in charge of leasing the Boatworks. There would have never been a Hacienda del Lago without the generous deal Moana cut with us for the restaurant. Bob gave me the Tahoe Marina Lodge business, only asking for rent. He sold all the other offices at the Lake to the property managers. He and his staff wined and dined us at very fine restaurants in SF and Tahoe and put us up at two of his properties in Hawaii. He was a classy, intelligent, and generous man and he was so happy to have you in his life.
I remember the Thanksgiving we were to join you and Bob at Butch and Shirley's for dinner and I had to work at the Tahoe Marina late. As I remember the story, Bob found out that no one in the group knew how to make gravy. He called me at work and asked if I did? I remember saying no respectable girl, with Southern roots, would be allowed to grow up not knowing that. He told me to close the office and get over to Timberland ASAP.
It was an honor to have known Bob. He was honorable and compassionate.
We are so sorry for your loss. Know you are loved.

Dear Meg,
Susan Davidson forwarded Bob's obituary to us today and Butch and I are sorry to hear of his passing. I'll always remember his friendly demeanor and his charming smile. I think the photo that goes along with the obituary shows him well and accurately.

I think of you at Tahoe from time to time, with your high heels and glass of ice coffee. You have a good laugh, too that goes along with your personality. I'm sure you and Bob had many laughs and fun times together.

Considering your loss, Butch and I wish you the best in many years to come. If you're ever at Tahoe, please call us (775) 827-6827. We'll get together for a talk and a glass of ice coffee.
Love,
Shirley and Butch Nelson

Ugh....how can this be. Bob Harmon and his wonderful family were SUCH a large part of my growing up years at The Tavern. It's so sad to watch these larger than life people in my life, slowly but surely slip from us all here on earth. I vividly remember Bob driving around in Tahoe City in his silver "Tub" Porsche...from where I was standing at that point in my young life, Bob was a man that was truly enjoying life to the fullest.

BRAVO BOB HARMON!....a life very well lived.

While our paths never crossed, two year older Bob had an amazing life. While Bob went to Stanford and I went to Cal, we both were CA attorneys, lived in Marin and loved Porsches, although I only bought one in 1960 new, a 356 B Super Cabriolet and kept it forever. Bob's real estate development was incredible with such great properties in Tahoe and restaurants.
My heart goes out to Meg, Ginger and his family for the loss.
God Bless You, Rick Bradley

I worked for Bob in the 1980s at Moana Corporation. He had it all: charisma, a beautiful family on whom he doted, great taste, and a twinkle in his eye that told you he "got it". A shrewd and visionary businessman with compassion for and generosity towards others (a rare combination then and now). The kind of person you don't forget.

Bob Harmon changed our life forever. In 1971 he gave me the opportunity to live and work at Lake Tahoe. Joan and I will never forget moving to Tahoe Tavern in 1971 and starting a new and exciting life working for Moana Corporation. He was supportive and a great person to work for.
