Robert Poon Obituary

POON, Robert C., D.D.S. - October 3, 1930 - November 23, 2005 Passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Bob was the first Asian-American dentist to have a private practice in the San Francisco Richmond District. He started his dental career in September 1957 and practiced for 47 years. He was a graduate of Galileo High School, UC Berkeley School of Public Health, and UOP School of Dentistry (formerly College of Physicians and Surgeons, now Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry). Robert is survived by Vera J, his wife of 42 years; three daughters and two sons-in-law: Denise L. Poon, Veronica and Kevin Kogler, and Natalie and Assaf Tarnopolsky; four grandchildren: Alexandra and Gabriela Kogler, and Max and Benjamin Tarnopolsky; by two brothers and a sister: Dr. Gene B. Poon, Dr. Lilly K. Poon, and William B. Poon, and their families. A sister, Miriam Pang, preceded him in death. Robert was a loving and steadfast husband and father. Family, friends, colleagues and patients will remember him as a sweet, modest soul, who was conscientious, gentle and unassuming. We are most thankful for having had him in our lives. Those interested in making donations in memory of Robert are encouraged to contribute to two places that were important to him: Chinatown YMCA- IMO Robert C. Poon, 855 Sacramento St., S.F. CA 94108, where he was a member and swam nearly every day for over 45 years; or UOP Dugoni School of Dentistry, Office of Development/IMO Robert C. Poon, 2155 Webster St., S.F., CA 94115. A Celebration of Life in Robert's memory will be held mid-January 2006. For more information, call (415) 751-4939.

He was my dentist from 12 y.o. to 30 y.o., so his passing to me is the end of an era.
