Sam was instrumental in our shul, Temple Beth El, acquiring a rabbi. It was his belief that it would be a value to the community in general and the Jewish community in particular for Humboldt to have a rabbi, a Jewish scholar.
He worked things out with both the temple and HSU that they would share a rabbi and the rabbi would serve TBE as well as teach at HSU/
Pearl was very involved in our synagogue´s religious school. Serving on the school board as chair and then coming back years later to consult for another school board.
She was highly skilled at disagreeing without being disagreeable.
Sam and Pearl were part of the foundation of our Jewish community. They set examples for how to live meaningful lives by how they treated people with great respect.

Sam was my professor and served on my Sociology MA Thesis cmte. His story and Sam and Pearl's life work was deeply inspiring to me and others working in international peacebuilding. I'll never forget the day when Sam and Pearl introduced to me and other students the Rosh Hashanah tradition of sharing apples and honey- for a sweet year. I am so very grateful for having known both Sam and Pearl.

Sam was one of the most inspiring people I have ever known. I feel privileged to have served Temple Beth Ell, Eureka, with him. There is no doubt I am a better person for having been influenced by him. I miss him sorely. His memory is such a blessing.

Sam and Pearl were pillars of Temple Beth El in Eureka, supporting and enriching our lives in so many ways for so many years. We miss them dearly. We hope to have a memorial event sometime in the spring for all their friends, colleagues and students here in Humboldt County.
Both Sam and Pearl were tremendously kind to me. It was a great privilege to be their rabbi. Their wisdom and vision have shaped the course of my life.
May their memories be a blessing.

I knew of Dr. Oliver only as a professor at HSU. He left an impression on me through his stories of life and the the idea of altruism. He was a good man, remembered often.

Ron, David, and Ian- I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of your mom and dad. They always made me feel welcome when I came over to your house as a kid to play ping pong. I also have fond memories of visiting you guys in Piedmont. And, as I'm sure you know, my parents and your parents had a special friendship. I still have an autographed copy of your dad's book, Restless Memories, that he gave me back in 1981. It will serve as a reminder of his extraordinary life.

Dr. Oliner was a kind, caring, and selfless man at HSU. I spent two years in the sociology grad program and spoke with him sparingly. I wish I'd spent more time with him. His altruism project left quite an impression on me.

A beautiful tribute to your father, Sam Oliner.
Sam's life was a great light for our humanity,
that keeps shining out in everyone he touched
with his compassion and wisdom.
May Sam's love of humanity nourish our souls
and keep us strong. In deepest sympathy. Rob.

I will never forget Sam and Pearl. They are forever etched in my heart. Both were such loving people I am proud to have called my friends.

Every year we heard Sam "gather the memories" of all of the community's ancestors and beloved dead on Yom Kippur. Now, after a long, good life, he has been gathered into those ancestors and family that he mourned with us every year. We always say, "May their memory be for a blessing". In Sam's case, there is no "may"- his memory, IS a blessing.
