Sheila Daly Obituary

Sheila Frances Daly Sheila was born January 14, 1935 in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan and passed away suddenly October 2, 2007 in San Francisco, CA. Sheila is survived by her three loving children: Thomas, Robert, Catherine and Catherine's partner, Margaret Wu. She was preceded in death by her parents Ellen and Peter Kortes; her uncle James Small; and her sister Phroso leaving behind siblings, Betty, Georgie, Penny, Lenny, and William. She also leaves behind her loving aunt Josephine Small, and cousins, Elaine Small, Sheila Cralle, and Mary Sigal. After growing up in Edmonton, Alberta, Sheila came to live with James and Josephine Small in the 1950s and fell in love with San Francisco. She married and had three children. In the 1970s a job transfer moved the family to San Bernardino where Sheila raised her children as a single mother ("before it was trendy" she'd remind us). When her youngest child entered junior high, she started attending college full time in the evenings in addition to her full time day job with the Santa Fe Railway. She earned two BAs (economics and business administration) and an MBA. In 1989 she followed her grown children back to the Bay Area and accepted a position at UCSF. A long-time UCSF employee, Sheila worked hard to assist the families of seriously ill children while working in pediatric endocrinology. In a similar spirit, she was on the board of directors of the Senior Citizen's Resource Directory for over 15 years. Known far and wide for her quick wit, fierce work ethic, and loving generosity, she touched the lives of many. Sheila retired briefly, but after a year spent traveling South America and Europe, returned to UCSF where she was working at the time of her death. We invite you to join us for two remembrances of her life. There will be a Rosary Thur., Oct. 4, 7pm at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Ave, Daly City, CA. Mass will be held Fri., Oct. 5, 4pm at St. John of God Church, 1290 5th Ave., SF. A reception to celebrate her life will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Koret Family House, 50 Irving St., 1234 10th Ave, San Francisco, CA 94122 (http://www.familyhouseinc.org).

Shiela was a remarkable woman. She inspired me in so many ways that no one has ever done. I worked closely with her for three years at UCSF. She was a mother to me and she was my rock, she was always there when I needed her, especially through the toughest moments of my life. I truly believe that our paths crossed because god knew that I needed someone like her. She was my guardian angel. I love and miss her so much. I extend my deepest sympathy to her children, Thomas, Catherine and Robert. THANK YOU for sharing a wonderful woman....

To Sheila's family,

Please accept my heartfelt condolence. Sheila had a very kind heart and extended her generosity to the missionaries of the SVD Philippines. The Mission Secretary of SVD Philippines is a family friend. I have informed him of Sheila's passing and he has arranged for masses to be offered for Sheila for one week in Manila. He has also enrolled Sheila in the SVD perpetual prayers for the departed.
