Shirley Phelps Price died peacefully on Wednesday, May 8th. She was surrounded by her loving family. A 4th generation Californian, Shirley Edna Phelps was born June 17, 1917 to Florence Boone Phelps and Ralph LaRose Phelps. Along with her three siblings: the late Ralph Phelps, Leslie Phelps Henderson and survived by her sister Virginia Phelps Meux (99), Shirley grew up on Tunnel Rd. in Berkeley. For nearly 60 years, Shirley resided in Piedmont, CA where she raised her family and became a beloved community member. Shirley's zest for life was evident in all that she pursued. An active community leader and volunteer, Shirley gave tirelessly of her time supporting many organizations including Children's Hospital, Piedmont Historical Society, Piedmont Garden Club, Volunteers in Public Safety (VIPS) for the Piedmont Police Department, Camp Fire Girls and many others. Her hometown efforts were recognized in many ways. In 1990, Shirley was awarded Volunteer of the Year from the city and in 1996, she was honored for her work with the Historical Society with the planting of a tree in Dracena Park. In 2009, Shirley proudly served as Grand Marshall of the 4th of July Parade. Her membership in Piedmont Community Church provided great solace, many friendships and profound comfort for many years. A proud graduate of the Anna Head School, class of '35 and UC Berkeley, class of '39, Shirley was an active Kappa Alpha Theta and loved to cheer on her favorite team, the Golden Bears. Shirley's greatest joy in life came from her family. As a mother of 4 children: Jeff Phelps Price, Virginia Price Allard, Randy Price and Leslie Price Powell, grandmother to 7 grandchildren: Chris Allard, Lisa Allard Zankich, Jason Powell, Tyler Powell, Brian Price, Matt Price, Nick Price and two great-grandchildren, Shirley was deeply loved and cherished. It is with immeasurable sadness, and heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our mother and Nanni. A service celebrating Shirley's wonderful life will be held at Piedmont Community Church on Thursday, May 16th at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to may send a donation to: Children's Hospital, Oakland ~ www.childrenshospitaloakland.org (510) 428-3100.

Shirley will be deeply missed by our closely knit San Francisco
Symphony Family. It was her idea to establish an East Bay League and it was highly successful. She hosted many meetings in her Piedmont home since 1965. The many SF Symphony Orchestra Members who played their music in her home will also be deeply saddened. She loved to attend the
SFS Matinees -going to SF on the SFS bus from the East Bay.
Now she can join hands with Bach, Beethoven and Mozart.
