STANLEY LEVENSON Obituary

Stanley M. Levenson, M.D. May 25, 1916-March 28, 2012 Stanley M. Levenson, M.D., 95, University Professor Emeritus, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY, died on March 28, 2012, in San Francisco, CA. He was born in Boston, MA, on May 25, 1916, the son of Anna and Nathan and brother of Irving. He attended Boston Latin School '33; Harvard College '37; and Harvard Medical School '41. After medical school, he worked on development of the oxygen mask used during World War II. As an intern at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, he met Eleanor Belloff, a nurse, who became his wife of more than 51 years. He began work at Boston City Hospital as a burn fellow shortly before the Cocoanut Grove fire, a major event in the history of burn care. Beginning in 1947, he served as Chief, Radiobiology, Army Medical Nutrition Laboratory in Chicago. At the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, he was a resident in surgery. In 1953, he moved to Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Washington, D.C., where he was Chief, Surgical Metabolism; Director, Basic Surgical Research; and Director, Germfree Research. He was also Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery, Georgetown Medical School. In 1961, he joined the faculty of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY, as Professor of Surgery; Director, Surgical Intensive Care - Burn Unit; and Director, Germfree Research Program. He became University Professor in 1986 and University Professor Emeritus in 1987. He worked until 2002, when he moved to San Francisco, CA. He was the author or co-author of more than 390 publications on burns, nutrition, wound healing, and other subjects. He received many honors including: National Institutes of Health Research Career Award, 1962-1987; Harvey S. Allen Distinguished Service Award, American Burn Association, 1976; McCollum Award, American Society for Clinical Nutrition, 1983; first Lifetime Achievement Award, Wound Healing Society, 1993; first Lifetime Achievement Award, Jacobi Hospital, Bronx Municipal Hospital Medical Center, 1999. He was predeceased by his parents, brother, and wife. He is survived by his daughters: Toby Sherwood of San Francisco, CA, and Laurie (Gary) Mesibov of Chapel Hill, NC; two grandsons: Brian (Sally) Mesibov of Charlotte, NC, and Todd Mesibov (Kate Eyes) of Chapel Hill, NC, and three great granddaughters: Anna, Claire, and Eleanor. A funeral was held on April 1, 2012, and he was buried next to his wife in Greenwich, CT. The family may be reached at: [email protected].
