Stephanie Jacobsen Obituary

Stephanie Jacobsen

June 17, 1918 - August 31, 2016

Stephanie Jacobsen (nee Alvena Selcho, nickname Sadie) passed away peacefully at home in Walnut Creek on August 31, 2016. Born in Ritzville, WA to Gottfried and Christina Selcho, she graduated high school in 1936 and worked as cashier at the Desert Hotel. She got transferred to the Desert Hotel in Spokane, and went on a tour of the Midwest, including WY, MT, SD, MN and IN with her employer's wife in their 1935 Fiat "Topolino" 2-passenger coupe. She then worked at the historic Davenport Hotel in Spokane around 1938. While there, she heard of opportunities in the airline industry, and moved to San Francisco, to the Russian Hill neighborhood on Green Street in 1942 to start work for United Airlines, where she rose to corporate sales agent, one of five women in a department of about 50 men. While at United, she traveled often to Hawaii (in 1954 in one of the first DC-7 flights) and took many trips up and down the coast with her sister Violet during the 1960's and 1970's in her favorite red VW Beetle called "Shatzi". Her 92 year old sister remembers her fondly as being an adventurous, unique, risk-taker with a passion for traveling and a great smile. She was always a "go-getter" and we will miss her energetic spirit.

Stephanie married at age 62 to Krueger "Jake" Jacobsen in 1979, after meeting him at United as a client for a trade show flight, and retired from United in 1980. They moved to Rossmoor in Walnut Creek in 1981, and enjoyed golfing and traveling, flying regularly to Hawaii and Palm Springs, in addition to Paris, Germany, and Mexico. She and Jake ran a booth at an antique mall for a few years. Jake died in 2013 at age 99.

She is survived by her sister Violet Harlow, nephews Dana Harlow and Jym Harlow, all of Ohio, nephew-in-law Robert Jacobsen, of Los Altos, CA, and several great nieces and nephews.

There will be a private celebration of life on Sunday September 18th in Rossmoor. For details, please email [email protected]. Donations in Stephanie's memory may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation.
