STEPHEN HUFFORD Obituary

Stephen Thomas Hufford, MD
Feb 27, 1958 - Nov 6, 2012
Steve passed away at the age of 54 surrounded by his loving family. Never knowing what life had in store, Steve made a lifelong practice of enjoying each day. Because of that philosophy, Steve had a rich and fulfilling life pursuing numerous passions - intellectual, musical and athletic. Steve was immensely proud of his daughters and loved spending time with them nurturing their interests, as well as sharing his love of the SF Giants. Steve leaves behind his devoted wife of 28 years, Gretchen Frantz, daughters Justine (21) and Kendall (14), father Harry (Jan), brother Gary (Pat), nephews Jeff, Kevin, Bryan, stepbrother Lewis (Lisa) and numerous other relatives.

I hadn't wanted to intrude at the time but am just remembering Dr. Hufford to a new doctor & thought I'd share what I wrote back on 11/21/12.

"I'm so sad. I just learned that the warmest, kindest, most compassionate doctor, the one who took the best care of me, has passed away.

Dr. Hufford was the one who first sent me to the emergency room. He was there when I had no neutrophils & they thought my condition might be turning into aplastic anemia.

He said we had to try every tool available to make sure I was OK. When our first big idea didn't work, he said he wanted me to be seen by experts at UCSF. Later, he sent me to Stanford, & when we didn't like what they had to say, he told me to go to Seattle. There, we found answers. There, we found hope.

He celebrated with me when things looked up. He stood by me when things were scary. He treated me like a person. He showed his humanity. He told me to live my life. He set a shining example of how one should live."

He is appreciated & missed. Thanks for sharing him w/us.

I worked with Steve for many years. I remember the first day he walked on the floor and started working with us. He was truly a great person and a great Doctor. We all shared our families and all of their achievements with each other. He was always so proud of his family and shared all his exciting trips with us. As a doctor you could never find a more compassionate man. We truly miss seeing Steve on the floor. He always knew what to say to make us all feel better when things got tough on the floor. I wish the Hufford family my heartfelt sympathy in this very tough time. He was a really special man.

My condolences to the Hufford family. I worked for Dr. Hufford many years ago. He assured me that he would and did, encourage me every day to return to college. I eventually became tired of his nagging and returned to college. He and his wife and at that time Justine were like my extended family. They were so nice too me. He always had a positive spirit and caring disposition. The patients' loved him. I am saddened by this news. Peace be with the Hufford family.

Dr. Hufford was my husband's doctor for two years through the ups and downs of a rare blood cancer. He intuitively knew what to say to my husband to encourage him and give him hope.
His is the epitome of a well-lived and worthwhile life.

So shocked to hear of Dr. Hufford's death. He was such a devoted doctor, family man and a dear friend. He shared many special moments with his patients. He was so proud of his two wonderful daughters and his lovely wife. I hope as this sad time passes you will only remember the happy memories he left behind.

I am very sad and shocked to hear about the recent passing of Dr. Hufford. He took over being my doctor for my follow-up post breast cancer visits when Dr. Cohen retired. I liked him from the moment I met him. He always was kind and caring, and a very good listener. I had no idea that he was carrying the burden of his own serious health problem. I too enjoyed sharing my love of Giants with him. My heart goes out to his wife and two daughters. I will sincerely miss him.

Hearing of Dr. Hufford's death has been and still is a huge shock. He was a fine doctor. My condolences to his family and his staff. He saw me through an unbelievable crisis. I wish I could have helped him in some way.

My deepest sympathies to the family that he left behind. I've been seeing Dr. Hufford for 5 years now. I am so thankful that I chose him to be my doctor. Dr. Hufford was an amazing human being! I cried the moment I found out and am still in disbelief that he is gone. He was a lifeline to me - always positive about everything, most especially to me, his patient. I see him every 3 months and the last time I saw him was on September 7, 2012. He never complained about his health. In the past, we talked about how he and his wife traveled to Europe when they were still in college. He would talk about his two daughters and that one time when he took his daughter biking, he fell and scratched his face. He was always totally positive about everything. I will sincerely miss him. Please know that he was an amazing human being. Thank you for sharing him with us.

I had the privilege of driving Justine and Kendall to school and getting to know Dr. Hufford a little because of that. Every time I met him it made my day better. And only a great man
could have had the daughters he did.

We are so sorry to learn of Dr. Hufford's death. My husband, Ron, went to his office today for his checkup and was shocked by the news. We loved him - he was our doctor for many years and he guided my husband through his prostate cancer and put him on the road to a healthy life. I remember his sensitivity and compassion when our son died. We send our sympathies to his wife and daughters and hope they will derive some solace knowing how much he helped humanity in his short life. We are so sorry... Darlene and Ron nelson

Gretchen, Justine, and Kendall....my heart broke learning your Dad was ill and yet impressed us all once again that his determination and love would guide him through this journey. He was my hero too. A a former patient I held your dad in high regard as he healed me in such a way, that I am here today enjoying the magic of parenthood and a life with a devoted husband. Ironically, and unbenounced to both of us until years later, one of my daughters would be named, Kendall Justine...maybe not such a coincidence.
Looks like I will always have the opportunity to remember your Dad for a very long time. May you find some peace knowing that he will forever be watching over you.
A raving fan,

Dr. Hufford had been my physician for just shy of two years. He was a wonderful doctor. He was very kind and caring, and made you feel that your health was important to him. He also had a delightful sense of humor and I enjoyed our chats about his family's travels. He'll certainly be missed. My deepest sympathy to his family.
