Steven Brick Memoriam

Steven Brick

April 15, 1947 - June 10, 2017

Steven A. Brick, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, and a highly respected judge, died unexpectedly on June 10. As a colleague said, "He was too young, too smart, too nice."
Steven was born April 15, 1947 in St. Louis, Mo. He graduated cum laude from Williams College in 1969, and from Boalt Law School in 1972, and then served as a law clerk to Judge Alfred C. Wollenberg. He joined the law firm of Orrick, Harrington & Sutcliffe in 1973, where he spent his entire legal career until his appointment to the Alameda County Superior Court in 2001. Before going on the bench Brick served a year as President of the Bar Association of San Francisco and was President of the Northern California chapter of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers. After going on the bench Brick served in the Law and Motion and the Civil Trial and Complex Litigation Departments, and for one year sat by designation on the California Court of Appeal. In September 2015 he retired from the court and became a private judge with JAMS. He is survived by his wife of 48 years Ann, his daughters Kate Elizabeth and Rachel Suzanne, his brother Jeffrey, his sister Katherine and a large and devoted family.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, June 13, at 11:00 a.m. at Congregation Beth El, 1301 Oxford, Berkeley, with internment to follow at Gan Shalom Cemetery in Briones, 1100 Bear Creek Road, Martinez. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the scholarship funds at Williams College or Berkeley Law School, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
He will be sorely missed by those who knew him.

I was out of the country and shocked to learn, just today, of Steve's sudden passing. What a great guy, an asset to all as a lawyer and judge, a credit to the profession, and always accessible to us "mere lawyers." He will be sorely missed.

So very sorry to hear this news, another life gone much too soon. My heartfelt condolences to the family. Judge Brick was a very nice man who I had the honor and pleasure of working with for a brief period of time while at the Wiley Manuel Courthouse. I'm sure he will be sorely missed.

I was devastated to learn of the news of Steve's passing. My heart hurts for Ann and their children and the rest of their family and friends. As a fellow Complex Court judge, I knew Steve as one of the best and brightest judicial stars we ever had, as well as one of the most genuinely nice people I ever met. I was looking forward to working with him again at JAMS and learning from him because he had my highest respect as a judge and as a person. May God give rest to his soul and comfort to his loved ones.
