Stuart Merrill Obituary
January 29, 1923 - August 1, 2017
Stuart, "Stu", former Sheriff of Alpine County, aged 94 passed away peacefully on August 1st at his home in Woodfords California.Born to Grant and Angie Merrill in Gardnerville NV, he was the third generation of the pioneer Merrill family to make their home in Woodfords.
A WWII Air Force veteran in the European theater, San Jose State graduate, member of Delta Sigma fraternity, and intercollegiate ski racer; he met Eileen Hunter on campus, they married in 1948 and returned to manage the family's Woodfords Store & Resort. Stuart was elected Sheriff of Alpine County in1958, served 5 terms, and continued his public service as an Alpine County supervisor.
A people person known for his compassion, generosity and willingness to help others he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, California Peace Officers Association, Carson Valley Freemasons, Sirs, Alpine County Historic Society.
Stuart is survived by his wife Eileen; children, Eric (Michele) & Cathy; grandchildren, Grant, Ian & Hanna; loving nieces, nephews and their families.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 27th, at 11:00 AM, Turtle Rock Park Community Center, Markleeville, CA. Contributions in lieu of flowers are requested in his name to the Alpine County Historic Society.

I first knew of Stuart Merrill as the landowner allowing me to have my horse pastured as a kid in Woodfords, providing me an avenue to stay out of trouble and develop a lifelong passion for which I will always be grateful... For decades after I always heard good things about him and what he did for the local community as well as our country. Gone but not forgotten, RIP Mr. Merrill, you left Alpine County a better place.
