Susan Shea Obituary

Susan Ireland Shea
August 8, 1951 - June 22, 2023
Susan/Suzie/Susie/Suzi/Shea/Shea-Girl, she responded to all. Susan was born in Burlington, Vermont in 1951. She had two birthdays: August 4 and August 8, a large Irish Catholic family story. She celebrated both. Wouldn't you?
Susan grew up in Burlington with her mother, Lucy Carey Shea, her father, Doc William Ireland Shea, and her siblings: Billy, 1941; Lucy, 1946; Petie, 1952; Danny, 1954; Sarah, 1957; and Michael, 1961.
In 1974, Susan left Vermont with Lee Woodward, her partner in life at that time, and hitchhiked to the San Francisco Bay Area. No surprise there; the Bay Area was then the escape hatch for oh so many of us.
When Susan arrived in Marin County, she worked at Kentfield Rehab Hospital as a nursing assistant for 7 years. In 1979, Susan joined forces with Sonja Hanson. They remained life partners living in the same Sausalito neighborhood for 44 years, until Susan's death.
In 1982, Susan launched her goal of following her mother into a career in nursing. That meant providing nursing care to the best standards available to any and all patients under her care. She attended College of Marin where she received her Registered Nurse degree in 1984, followed by the UCSF School of Nursing where she received her Masters in Nursing as a Nurse Practioner in 1991. After retirement, Susan continued to volunteer in nursing right up to the end. Nursing, caring for others, was her life's passion.
Susan began her career in HIV work in 1991, as soon as she qualified as a Nurse Practioner. Over the next 25 years Susan worked in and helped lead HIV programs at UCSF including the Women's Specialty Clinic that she helped found in 1993, at San Francisco General's Ward 86 which was the original HIV speciality clinic in San Francisco, as a member of the San Francisco AIDS Care Council, and with the UCSF California State Prison Project. Susan was a warrior for her patients. Ask any of them, and step back if you question Susan's value in their lives or their value in hers.
Susan was an athelete, she started as a youngster in Vermont, skiing in the winter, and swimming in the summer. When she came West she expanded her physical activities to include daily running, marathons, kayaking, bicycling, backpacking, and she never stopped swimming.
Susan had a sense of humor that always got her through the most difficult times, and helped others get through theirs. She was a vociferous and eclectic reader which the Sausalito library can confirm. Music was integral to her life, and she came of age on Rythym and Blues. Put on Aretha Franklin and stand back, she was on the floor dancing and stayed there as long as Aretha sang. She was constantly curious about the world around her, and was passionate about her beekeeping, chickens and gardening. And, it would be remiss not to mention Susan's proclivity for swearing. She had no editor when it came to four letter words, not when working, not when dancing, not when swimming, not ever.
When Susan retired in 2015, she brought her warrior role home to her communities in Sausalito and in Marin City. She was always the go to person for friends with healthcare needs, and she volunteered with Marin City Community Development Corporation, San Francisco Coast Guard Auxillary, Performing Stars of Marin, Marin Vaccine Buddies, and Save Our City in Marin City.
Susan had no tolerance for anyone being treated less-than. She did not subscribe to any religious practice, but she did firmly believe and live by the principle that we are all created equal, and should be treated equally with respect and consideration. That was her modus operandi. God help you if you crossed that line in front of her.
Susan will be missed by oh so many of us that she cared for and cared for her. She was a truly remarkable human being in all the best meanings of those words. Her convictions are needed by all of us now more than ever.

Suzie you are truly missed. I never thought in a million years our friendship would come to an end so abruptly. There isn´t a day that goes by that I don´t think of you. Thank you for all your guidance, love, and support that you poured into my family. I´ll never forget all the laughter and tears we shared. I´ll never forget you. You will always be in my heart. Till we meet again, with so much love from the Kassa family

I´m so sorry to know Susie has left us. We were very close through high school and college. When she moved to CA we unfortunately lost touch.
She had many good friends in Burlington and I-will always remember waterskiing and the wild parties at camp.
We remember her fondly and always will.

Ebullience, serendipity, enthusiasm, irreverence, commitment, great love. Susie´s loss is a rent in the fabric of all of our communities. A world without Susie is a world with less vibrancy, compassion and, not the least, fun. No one who was there can forget Susie showing up to a City Council meeting in a chicken suit, or orchestrating a kayak balloon demonstration at the ferry landing. We had another plan for performance art in Sausalito that, sadly, did not come to pass. And I know from personal experience that Susie´s medical knowledge, experience, personal accessibility and support for friends was unmatched. I, and my "SO" Bill, am in her debt. I miss Susie, and thank her for her presence in our lives.

She can´t be gone. She won´t be gone. Never. Ever. No one like her. I will hear her voice. Her laughter. I will quote her when I need to use a four letter word. I will kayak with her. And I will bring peaches to Sonja forever when it´s peach season. And I will see the moon and the stars and the planets. I will see her face there and there. And...

Oh, Suzie... I am in Kenya with a friend and read your remembrance. I am heartbroken. I kept passing your house and it was so quiet. You inspired us all with your passion, fiery spirit and compassion for all who who have been poorly treated, ignored or discriminated against. We must continue to fight for all you believed in.

Susie was a wonderful person. I knew her and Sonja from our neighborhood and our interactions with their dog Painter. My best and last memory of Susie is when she saw me with my dogs, her and Sonja immediately sat down on the ground, giggling, and calling to them to come say "hi". Yes it was a busy bike path, but they had a higher purpose. They loved, loving, laughing, gabbing and connecting with this amazing community and our fur buddies. Susie was a spitfire, very sassy and sharp, but loving and caring at the same time. I am truly heartbroken for Sonja, Painter, her friends and family and the larger Bay Area community that she while heartedly connected with and supported.

Suzie was very compassionate and passionate. She was always there for friends in need and was a passionate voice for the rights of Sausalito residents. She was a force for good. In memory of Susan, let us take a little bit of that compassion, passion, strength and courage and magnify it throughout our communities, our country and the world! She will be missed by so many people as was obvious at the beautiful celebration of her life. Thank you, Sonja.

Susan and Sonja (always "Susan and Sonja") will always be the center of gravity for our Spring Valley neighborhood. I can't remember exactly when we officially met. I think it was when our son Rob was small, and they invited him to help with their beehives. While I appreciated how generous and kind they were, I had no idea about the depth of their involvement in our town. Whether dressing up as a canary to protest at a City Council meeting or bringing eggs and honey to her neighbors, working to build community was at the heart of Susan's life.

Susan and Sonja's fearlessness in advocating for the residents of Sausalito and beyond is legendary. Both trusted and respected advisors on so many subjects, always on the side of the most vulnerable, the first ones I call to get perspective on any given issue. There were so many spirited debates at their perfect yellow house on Spring Street. Susan and I had a deal that our conversations had no decibel limit, and yes, swearing was just going to happen...

Susan was such a tremendous force of nature it is inconceivable that she is gone. She was an absolutely fearless advocate for the vulnerable, invariably passionate and tough, with the true heart of a warrior. She was our conscience urging us to do better, to show more compassion, and most of all to not give up the fight, ever. She trained a legion of us and set the example that we continue to follow (or try to).

So many of us offer the prayer, "Thank god for Susan Shea".

Susie, a VERY Dear, a VERY special friend. For us, Susie gave hope for humanity. Ever conscious of injustices in this world, Susie totally "GOT IT" She was so refreshing to be around. She worked to make life just and fair, to make the planet live and thrive. Susie was a very present force. We miss Susie, we miss her a LOT! She is with us always. Sonja, we walk with you always!

I first met Susan while working as academic faculty support staff in Family Health Care Nursing at UCSF. She was always positive and funny. Susan quickly became one of my favorite people and faculty members. Because she was not assigned a coveted "window office", she hung a window from the ceiling in her office. Susan was what is known in the faculty support world as "low maintenance". Her humor was always in evidence, which made her a joy to know and work with. Thank you, Susan.

To my best friend, a true friend. I miss you dearly. You were so many things to me in my life. You wore many hats. You were my voice when I wasn´t heard, you was my direction when I would get lost. You held me together to help my kids. We love you! You will never be forgotten. Till we see each other again. Love you so much! This pain may never leave me.

I first met Susie with Sonja by her side at our print shop. We always referred to her and Sonja as one. When we first met we thought thank God, another couple just like us, where you didn´t say one name without the other. They were to us one. I loved Susie for her shoot from the hip style and her colorful metaphors,we both had the same style. She would only tell you the truth, nothing fake about her. I admired her passion for whatever project she took on. The only side of Susie I saw was her kindness. If I wasn´t feeling well, Dea would usually give her a call and was always there for us. Me feeling better was just as important to her as it was to us. Having a printing business we got to see all of the things she did to help all kinds of projects.
I admire her passion, her openness, the joy she brought others while not really taking credit for it, I loved that we could swear and get things off of our chests. She was one tough broad but so very kind. I don´t think I will ever get used to seeing Sonja without Susie by her side. When she left us I think we all feel that she took a piece of our hearts with her.Love you Susie and thanks for sharing with us part of your life. While you´re up there make us some cool rainbows!

Susie was my neighbor and I am so grateful that I moved to her street. I met her eight years ago when she and Sonja were the first to welcome my husband, Paul, and I to Sausalito. I instantly loved her passionate spirit. She fought for what she believed in, and she loved fiercely, especially her partner, Sonja. I can still see her dancing on her front porch after her hip replacement, strolling the street in her beekeeper gear as she maintained the neighborhood hives, and swimming near the shore in Richardson Bay. There is no Sausalito without Susie, and she is so greatly missed.

Susan Shea was a wonderful teacher and mentor. She was one of two talented clinical instructors who led our cohort of family nurse practitioner students in 1993-1995. She was a fierce, demanding instructor who gave us her very best and expected us to give ours. I am grateful she was in my life.

Susan was a clever NP, and if not for her excellent knowledgeable care, I would not be here today. She also attended many of my friends and was consistently upbeat, funny and smart. I know there are many people who survived HIV long enough to be on the effective drugs because of her extensive knowledge (and creative ideas re treatment). Thank you Susan. I'm sure are surrounded now by many people you helped in the past. A life well lived!!
