Suzanne Berg Obituary

Suzanne Neta Berg (ne Magee, formerly Williams) passed away June 20, 2011 after kicking cancer's ass for more than three decades. Born in Toronto on May 27, 1951 to Bill and Yvonne Magee, Suzanne was a Canadian girl who had her children young, struggled with relationships, worked hard for everything she ever gained or lost, and longed for adventure, education, and freedom in all its fleeting forms. She loved intensely and experienced deeply; she never valued money or possessions over integrity, independence, or feeling; she was both private and startlingly open; she was both willful and disarmingly kind; she liked children and sweets and politics; she was smart and beautiful, had a sharp tongue and a fierce work ethic; she was inclusive and just; she made a life in the U.S., missed Canada, and wished for more; she was extraordinarily dedicated to her children and took great joy in her grandchildren. She was not done yet. She is survived by her siblings Doug, Mary-Beth, and Kent; children Andrew, Brady, and Adrienne; and grandchildren Aidan, Zoe, Gabriel, Zach, Ephraim, Nate, Leila, and Eleni. Funeral services will be held at 1:30pm at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church in Westchester, California on Monday, June 27 (12:30 viewing). In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, go to the doctor and take care of your health, or just buy yourself a lipstick or a coffee and give your loved ones some extra time and attention.

To Mary Beth: "I was so sad to hear of Suzanne's death. I know how close you were to her and know that it is going to be a tough go for you getting over this. I hadn't seen Suzanne since my Leaside days but you always gave me an update on her adventures and she certainly did live life to the fullest. Take care and remember the good times ... xox." Suzanne lived a wonderful life. As a friend she had this wonderful talent that could only have come from the heart – loyal, compassionate, always caring and listening, knowing the things to do or say, to make the problem go away. And though the winds of life caused her to fall to her knees, she had the resilience of spirit to bend but not break, to courageously lift her head and move forward onto the next battle, cause it was in these times the strength of her character shone through. It is easy to be pleasant when life flows by like a stream but a person’s worth is ever so evident when things go wrong.

Her life, her memory and her love will live on in the stories of her kids - Andrew, Brady, and Adrienne; her siblings – Doug and Mary-Beth, and her friends and whenever on some dark lonely point in life - if you listen keenly you will hear the sound, a whisper among the leaves, voice urging you to “be strong and carry on,” cause what lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within.

Her loss is immeasurable not only to her family but to her friends. I am honored and thankful to have known her and had the opportunity to stand and shout yes, she was my friend. To paraphrase Bob, “(A) good friend we lost along the way. Rest easy my friend, your work was indeed good and just.

Suzanne was my big sister, and like all big sisters she knew exactly how to torture me. Nonethess, there is nothing in this world I wouldn't have done for her. She knew this and even took advantage on occasion. She was a free and gentle spirit who hated constraints and loved to colour outside the lines which she did many times. I loved her dearly and will miss her more than anyone can know. I celebrate her remarkable life.

Love forever

Andrew and Adrienne. I am so sorry for your loss. Your mother was an amazing woman, a true fighter, that got everything possible out of her life. Like a cat with nine lives she survived some horrible ordeals, often with a smile on her face. At last she is at peace. Her spirit lives on through you and your families. You have my heartfelt condolences and love in this stressful time.

This is, hands down, the most perfect obituary I have ever read. I just wish it wasn't Suzanne's, a woman whose unstoppable wit would have been her most memorable feature were it not that she was equally sweet, smart, fashionable, and driven. Her jokes were usually delivered in a mumble-y understated tone that added to their hilarity; she gravitated toward the zaniest people in her orbit and became their friend; she threw terrific parties and never sat still. I don't know how many people I've told about a woman who chuckled and gave the bird to more death sentences than I can count. She was way, way more fierce than my mom but in many ways reminded me of her and so stood in her stead more than once when I was living in California. I am heartbroken, all the way through to the bone, that I will not hear her playful insults, see her wry smile, talk to her, enjoy her, again. My love to the family most of all. You guys, your mom and grandmom was one of a kind. But you don't need me to tell you that. Love, Rae.
