Teresa Hurley Obituary

Teresa Hurley

On January 30, 2015, surrounded by her family, Teresa passed into God's embrace on a great tide of love. She lived 89 magnificent years.

Teresa was preceded in death by her parents Michael and Julia Murphy of Co. Cork, Ireland. She shared a long, loving life with her husband Joe of 65 years, her children Kathy, John (Christine), Jerry (Teresa), Joe (Bernadette) Hurley, and Mary Ann (Bill) Provence. Her grandchildren Dan (Natalie) and Michael (Andrea) Provence, Megan, Owen, Regina, Julia, and Noelle Hurley were blessed that Grandma always had a smile, a hug, and an ice cream drumstick waiting for them. Teresa found great joy in her three great-grandsons Nolan, Lucas and Jacob Provence. She was the loving sister of Betty (Warren) Johnston, the late Gerald Murphy and sister-in-law of Sr. Mary Edith Hurley RSM and the late Margaret (Clem) Zarcone. She was also a very beloved aunt.

Teresa treasured her Irish heritage and was proud of being a native San Franciscan. She graduated from St. John Ursuline High School in 1942. The lessons learned there and at home led to a life of grace, gentleness, patience, gratitude, and love. Teresa married Joe in 1950, and the two were life-long partners. They were active parishioners of Holy Name. She and Joe enjoyed many good times with the Over-the-Hill Gang. Her gift of hospitality welcomed people from down the street and around the world with delicious meals, an open ear, and a compassionate heart. Her Irish Bread was legendary in many workplaces, especially in March. Teresa and Joe enjoyed several trips together in retirement, but her true pleasure was always in family, friends and faith. While her family loved camping trips, Teresa endured them saying, "I'm happy to go anywhere, as long as I can be home at night." Well Mom, now you have truly made it home. We will miss you but are forever grateful for the life you lived and gave to us.

Special thanks to all who lovingly cared for Teresa in her final months: Dr. Charlton and Genise, Annemarie, Catherina, Josie, Anna, Bridget, and Susan.

A Vigil will be held Feb. 5 at 7pm with visitation from 6-7pm, and the Mass is Feb. 6 at 10:30am, both at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 39th & Lawton. Private burial at Holy Cross Cemetery. Donations to St. Vincent de Paul Society or your favorite charity in memory of Teresa Hurley.

Theresa was so beautiful.
Her eyes upon your sight
Broke with the lambent purity of planetary light,
And such a cordial beauty, like a light within a vase,
Touched every line with glory of her animated face.

Joe and Family you are in our prayers.
