Thomas Costello Obituary

Thomas Ciamon Costello
January 17, 1944 - March 7, 2023
Thomas Ciamon Costello passed away on March 7th 2023. Born January 17th 1944 in Scarriff County Clare Ireland, the second of 5 children to James and Mary Costello. Dad was seen as a kid running the horse and trap into town and collecting neighbors' messages. He was known as a kid with a big smile and a gracious heart. He was always proud of the medal he won hurling with a group that were known as the "Tough Mountain Men". Dad's childhood saw him spending countless hours working the farm and also working at the local factory.
Dad would eventually part from his native shore and head west to America. He lived in Brooklyn with his Aunt and Uncle Tess and Jim O'Rourke. Dad quickly found his way into the Irish scene and never looked back. He spent the next ten years bartending all around New York, from Manhattan to the Bronx. He used to enjoy telling stories of working in Rosie O' Grady's and watching the Twin Towers being built as he poured drinks at the Blarney Star. He married his wife Denise in 1973. They ran "Costello's" bar in Inwood, and began raising their sons Tommy and Michael in the Bronx.
Dad made his way west again and settled in San Francisco. A very proud Sunset resident for over 40 years, Dad was known to stop into a few of the neighborhood establishments from time to time. He worked for Dalton construction and eventually owned Costello trucking. He was the owner, and best customer, of his beloved clubhouse, Costello's Four Deuces. Dad was a pistol, a rounder. He played and worked hard and really enjoyed life. He loved the Irish community and would always be there to help anyone in need. He was a proud season ticket holder of his beloved 49ers for years and also could be seen Sunday mornings at Fiddlers Green cheering on the Banner Men.
Dad joins his parents and older brother Rogie in heaven. He leaves behind his 2 sons, Tommy (Heather) and Michael (Vikki) and his four grandsons, Jack, Mikey, Luke, and Conor. He also leaves behind brothers Flan, Ray, and sister Marie. The world lost a true character today. One of the good guys. Tommy and I miss you Dad. Give Mom a hug from us.
Friends and family may visit Tuesday, March 14, 6:00pm at Holy Name of Jesus, 1555 39th Ave, San Francisco, 94122 where a Vigil Service will be at 7:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, March 15, 11:00am at Holy Name of Jesus followed by a Committal Service at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 1500 Mission Road, Colma.

Mikey and Tom. So sorry to hear about the passing of your father and my childhood surrogate Irish dad. He always welcomed me into your home and treated me like one of his own. Whether supporting us at our basketball games or giving us rides home from the golf course or just yelling at as for being knuckleheads, his kindness is still remembered and always will be. He was a great man and he will be missed. My sincerest condolences to you both and your families.
