Timothy Horton Obituary

Timothy K Horton

Sept. 8,1948-Aug.8, 2017

Tim Horton, 68, passed peacefully after a long illness with Leukemia.
Tim was born September 8th, 1948 to Jeanne and Bill Horton in Portland, Oregon. He is survived by his wife, Madeline, daughter, Jeanie, son, Jay, father, Bill Horton, his two sisters, Kris Heath (Bruce) and Kathy Rose (Rob), his mother-in-law, Fredi May and his Aunt Shirlea Savage. He is predeceased by his Mother, Jeanne.
He attended Atkinson grade school and Franklin high school in Portland. He obtained his teaching degree from the University of Oregon and later received a Masters in Counseling. Tim taught school in Portland and eventually moved to California where he taught high school in San Jose.
He moved to Berkeley and worked for the city's Youth Employment Program.
Jazz enthusiast that he was, he met his wife, Madeline May, at a jazz club in Oakland. They married in 1987. Their beautiful daughter, Jeanie, was born in 1990.
Changing careers, he bought and ran a small business until 2001 when he decided to go back to teaching. He chose an inner-city grade school with low-income children in East Oakland to do his greater good.
Many a party was had at the Horton house with family and friends and always a sports channel on.
The Hortons traveled as often as possible to Europe, Canada, long road trips to all four corners on the US and in between. Every single summer Tahoe and Sunriver were on the calendar.
Tim was a planner and always had a fun agenda for nights out on the town and future vacations.
He was a solid, happy guy who was seldom known to ever complain. Happy-go- lucky.
He was a voracious reader and a New York Times crossword puzzle pro. He played a mean game of Scrabble and Cribbage. He was a longtime fan of the Giants, Warriors and Oregon Ducks.
Tim was a favorite uncle to eighteen nieces and nephews: Nathan Heath (Chelsea), Ryan Heath and Micah Heath (Bethany), Jake Rose and Jonah Rose, Christophe Adrian, Olivier Adrian (Sophal), Jeremie Adrian, Tessa Adrian (Antoine) Brendan Vandor, Caitlin May, Zoe May, Cody May, Lewis May, Jackson May, Ella May, and Hugo May. In-laws Ann Vandor (Steven), Sheila Adrian, Patrick May (Susan), Bruce May (Joan), Peter May (Diana). He will be missed by five great nieces and nephews, Emi, Baptiste, Nola, Penelope and Isla.
A service is planned in Portland, Oregon on August 26th at Trinity United Methodist Church.
A celebration of Tim's wonderful life will be held on Sunday, November 19 in Oakland, Ca.
Donations may be made to The Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.

I have good memories, of time, I spent with Tim in Portland in the
1970's.
Tim taught a special aid class at King Elementary School. I was the teacher aide.
We had many good laughs, which kept us going, as we took kids on many field trips.

I remember Tim, as my cohort, in an adventure to San Francisco Chinese New Year 1973. It was a short weekend trip just for this event. Both of us were a little overwhelmed.
Such a celebration, with us both avoiding firecrackers along
the streets.
We were coming from a quiet Portland. We slept on the floor in sleeping bags at my uncle's shop in Mill Valley.
It was quite a fast and somewhat furious weekend, just to see the New Year clebration. We both had to be back to work on Monday.

Tim was an advid baseball fan and going to spring training was a highlight for him at the time.
I remember him fondly as are special person and good friend.
May his family and friends find peace in fond memories which I sure are plentiful.
With heart felt sympathy

We are so sorry for you and your family. Losing your brother is awful, and knowing how much he did to help kids makes him even more special than "just" a brother. So sorry Kathy

tim was the eternal op-tim-ist. he ALWAYS looked on the bright side of everything, everybody and every issue...even his illness.

i will miss our weekly saturday morning conversations at eddie's. we talked for hours over the years about pretty much everything...
our kids, music, sports, restaurants and mostly teaching. he was a die-hard duck fan. friends would always come into eddie's with a book for him to read which brought a smile to has face. he always shared the latest educational article with me.

tim, we will all miss you, but thank you so much for spreading hope to all you met.
