Tina Yee Obituary

Tina Tong Yee
September 19, 1946 - May 14, 2022
Dr. Tina Tong Yee, age 75, passed away on May 14, 2022 at her home in San Francisco surrounded by her family. She had bravely battled cancer for 3 years. A wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and psychologist, she was a woman of compassion and personal strength. Her home was a loving gathering place for all holiday celebrations and meals for her extended family and friends. An all-time favorite was her special vegetarian "jai" dish slow cooked in a huge pot.
Tina was born on September 19, 1946 in Honolulu, Hawaii to James and Katy (Wong) Tong, then left for college in San Francisco where she later married her childhood sweetheart Edwin Yee. She received her Ph.D. degree from The Wright Institute in Berkeley, CA in Clinical Psychology. She dedicated her career to ensuring that the San Francisco behavioral health system provided culturally competent services and empowered clients through work opportunities and peer support.
She was a director at the Community Behavioral Health Services in the City and County of San Francisco Department of Public Health, a board member for non-profit organizations, a consultant, and later opened a private practice as a psychologist helping individuals and families.
As an Asian American woman, she understood only too well the racial and gender inequalities existing in our society, and advocated for equality and justice. As a consultant to corporations on diversity and cultural competence, she led seminars, trained and coached staff.
Her passion for seeing the world led her on travels and cruises through six continents with family and friends. Her roots in Hawaii brought her back to the islands at least twice a year.
Tina is survived by her husband Edwin, sons Tyson (Irene), Kuo, Kuan (Samantha), grandchildren Emily, Koby, Justin, Brandon, Miles, and sisters Carolyn and Ginger.
A private memorial service will be held on June 17th followed by a Celebration of Life for her.

I just learned of Tina's passing today, and am so sad to hear of it. It was wonderful working with Tina in her role at DPH-CBHS. She will forever be known as pioneer in cultural competence, and one of it's strongest advocates, often giving us in the nonprofit sector "insider" tips on how we could advocate for it when she could not as a public servant. She had the biggest and most welcoming heart, always in a bright and merry mood. Condolences to Tyson and all her family and friends. She will be missed.

Love,
Kent Woo

Before I received this notice, I dreamt of Tina again. This was similar to my experience when she passed away. So I thought that she must be reminding me of her anniversary. In my dream, she walked passed me while walking in the park and a did not respond when I remarked that I thought she was gone. She responded when I inquired about Ed, her husband. Tina in her usual way said he is fine/ he is OK.

In my culture, some of us believe that our dearly departed are around us, watching us, supporting us and sometimes showing up in our dreams to remind us to say a prayer for them. I am glad she shows up in my dreams sometimes.

I dreamt of Tina this morning (June 18th) inviting me to lunch, seeing her beautiful vivid face. Since we lost touch a decade ago, I googled her to see how she was doing only to find out that she passed away in May. While writing this, I am very tearful because I very much appreciate her visiting me in my dream.
Dr. Tina Tong Yee was in the forefront of cultural competency within the SF Behavioral Health Services. I remember her pulling an all nighter with me to submit a federal proposal, which we received. This provided parenting classes for Filipino families, for which I am indebted.

To Edwin, Tyson, Kuo, Kuan and loved ones of Tina, I offer my deepest condolences.
