December 5, 1922- January 6, 2019
Warren Heckrotte was born in Ohio, Dec. 5, 1922. He received a Ph.D in physics from UC Berkeley and joined the senior staff at Cal's Radiation Laboratory. Over the next 4 decades, he worked on nuclear weapon issues at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. As a nuclear expert, he was recruited to negotiate nuclear arms reduction under five different administrations, from Kennedy to Clinton. Although the Atomic Energy Commission wanted to hire him, Heckrotte insisted on keeping his independence by remaining affiliated with a research institute rather than a government agency. This apolitical stance allowed him to be the only delegation member to work on arms reductions through so many different administrations. His responsibilities included writing treaty text and analyzing vetting systems for nuclear verification. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

I grew up with Warren's daughters. Warren could be a bit aloof if you were a kid, but I always found him and his work fascinating. As I grew up and became an adult, it was much easier to communicate with him. I spent a number of Christmas eves at his house or Maggies, always great food and great conversation. They were both incredible cooks, and great at the art of hosting a lively dinner party. They were an intrinsic part of the Berkeley way of life, and of my growing up, and thinking of him brings up fond memories. Condolences to John, Mia and Mickey. Xoxo

Sorry to learn of his death. He and some of his Livermore colleagues used to come to my sister's (Toni Joseph's) home near Chevy Chase, MD, when he was in the DC area on business. I recall one summer in Geneva in the late 1960s when he and my sister were in Switzerland working on the NPT. We were there during the Fete de Geneve when everyone was bonking others with "knowledge hammers" (soft, large plastic hammers). I thought he was so intelligent that he did not need to be bonked, but he showed a good sense of humor by letting others bonk him on the head. Besides, I couldn't reach quite that high!

Deeply sorry to learn about Warrens death. I met him in the 80s and always thought and will think of him with great warmth, love and admiration. He was truly special, not only his steep garage drive.
