I’ve known Bill since the late 80s, and there are so many words that come to mind to describe him, including smart, handsome, adventurous, charming, confident and classy. He loved to be the provider of a good time and was the ultimate host at his home in Montecito. But there is one little story that sticks out in my mind, showing how he left an impression with everyone he befriended.
He came to visit me when I moved up to SFO in the early 90s. He hadn’t lived there for decades, but as a one-time San Franciscan he was excited to show me his old town. I figured it had probably changed a bit since then, and he might be disappointed. But, we went in to John Barleycorn’s for lunch, and it was surreal. As soon as we stepped into the classic old pub, a man came running to Bill with open arms, “Well, if it isn’t the devil himself!” he said with a laugh and patted Bill’s back.
They proceeded to share with me some great stories of the good old times in San Francisco together. This man was truly happy to be in Bill’s presence, just as most of us were when we saw him. There is no doubt that Bill Slater was a character that left a mark on friends and acquaintances wherever he traveled and lived. Let’s all raise a glass to Bill, for he will truly be missed…
