WILLIAM BADE Obituary

William George Bade
(1924-2012)
William G. Bade, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at UC Berkeley, passed away peacefully on August 10th, 2012.
Bill Bade was born in Oakland on May 29th, 1924 to Elizabeth Marston of San Diego and William F Bade, a Professor at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA. Early childhood was in Berkeley, but after his father's death, his family moved to San Diego in 1936. He graduated from San Diego High School in 1942, and after a freshman year at Pomona, attended Cal Tech (Navy V-12), graduating with a physics degree in 1945. He returned from Navy service to earn a PhD at UCLA in mathematics in 1951.
Bill started teaching at UC Berkeley in 1951 and married Eleanor Barry in 1952. They moved to Connecticut (Yale) in 1952, but returned to UC Berkeley in 1955, where Bill remained until retirement in 1991. He served as Vice-Chair for Graduate Studies, deeply cared about his students (26 successful PhD candidates in his field of functional analysis/Banach Algebras), and loved teaching and collaborative research. Bill's years at Berkeley resulted in many wonderful international friendships that are still cherished by his family today.
Bill's many interests included a deep love of nature. This he shared with his family, especially on their many trips to his beloved Sierra Nevada. He also loved music, enjoyed amateur winemaking, and was active with Elly in their local California Native Plant Society.
Bill Bade will be remembered as a man of great integrity, gentle kindness, and quiet wisdom. He was a true friend, loving father and grandfather who will be greatly missed, and is survived by Eleanor, his wife of 60 years, their six children Michael (Rebekah), Sarah (Georg), Alan (Wendy), Anne (Michael), Ned (Laurie), Margaret (Dan), and five grandchildren; Hanna, Dario, Katie, Gilbert, and Lyle.
Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Bill's Life in the chapel at Pacific School of Religion, 1798 Scenic Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94709, on October 6th at 1 PM, followed by a reception in the Bade Museum.
The family encourages memorial donations to the Bade Museum of Biblical Archaeology at the Pacific School of Religion, 1798 Scenic Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94709; or to The Mathematics General Fund, Dept. of Mathematics, UC Berkeley, 970 Evans Hall, Berkeley, CA 94720-3840, with directions to help math graduate students in Bill's memory.

Bill and Elly were like second parents to me when I dated their eldest son in college. He was a quiet man with a big heart. My sympathy to all of the family and the many people whose life he touched.
