William Irwin Obituary

William Allen Irwin
July 18, 1922 ~ May 4, 2021
Bill Irwin passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 4th, two months before his 99th birthday from an inevitable combination of time and illness.

Born in San Francisco in 1922 to Moira Moynihan and William Irwin, he lived most of his happy life in the City surrounded by his loving family and large circle of life-long friends. He worked a variety of jobs from his early teens on, but most enjoyed his 25 years as a brewer at Lucky Lager.

His lifelong interest in the seas began one year before World War II broke out when he graduated from Lowell High School and joined the Merchant Marines where he rose to level of Chief Engineer.

Bill married the love of his life, Regina Cirelli, in 1949 and spent 68 happy years with her and her large Italian family– especially her mother Rita, Rose (Luigi ) Silvestri, Mary (Felix) Ruggiero, Carmel (Lou) Barella.

At 98, Bill was preceded in death by just about everyone including his wife of 68 years Regina, and sisters Helen and Jean (James). Bill is survived by his two sons, Bill and Bob, and many adoring nieces and nephews.

The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care and care-giving Bill received at Sagebrook SF during his final years.

Due to COVID-19, a private service will be held for immediate family.

Dear Bill and Bob,

Another good one took his journey to heaven! The news of your Dad being gone brought sadness to many I’m sure. I gave the sad news to my siblings. There response was sad that he is gone, and what a fun nice guy he was.

We enjoyed many St. Joseph Feast Days with him and your mom. He was part of the poker game. Most of the poker guys are playing in heaven. He will find them and join in. Your mom and all the rest of the gang were there to greet him. You had wonderful parents. May your memories of them and the love that you shared get you through this tough time.

One more thing - your Dad combined St. Patrick’s and St. Joseph Days.
Always a green hat! A true Irishman! He was loved by all of my family.

What can I say about Bill. Great conversationalist, human being and most of all a great hand shaker. He will be missed.
