Dear Gretchen, Jeff, Steve and Anne,

I met Bill when I was fresh out of Stanford at just 21, twenty-four years ago. He always made a huge impression on me, mostly with his generousity of spirit and twinkling good looks (those extraordinary good looks were inherited by all his children, by the way!). He instantly and always made me feel welcome and part of the family, which was very significant to me. I intuited that the kind man I knew also contained a naturally intense and powerful person underneath. It was an honor to know him. And it was such a pleasure to see him one more time at the gala at SF City Hall for the Marine Mamal Center last October. He seemed really happy to be out and about with his family. He was a real role model.

love and condolences to all of you,

Gretchen Bond de Limur and Charley de Limur

We were lucky enough to have the privilege and honour of meeting Bill and Gretchen Kimball when they came to London with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation for the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002. In spite of Bill's infirmity, he took part enthusiastically in all the activities with huge enjoyment, marvellous humour and was an enormous inspiration to all of us who were lucky enough to make his acquaintance. Bill was a delight to be with; a truly generous gentleman, in all the best senses of the word, with a huge sense of fun, appreciation and enjoyment.

He will be very sorely missed, especially by Gretchen, to whom our sympathetic thoughts and condolences go out at this very sad moment.

A unique man has left the world a sadder but, thanks to his incredible generosity, a better, kinder, richer place.
