William Rohrig Obituary

William Rohrig
05/28/1949 - 08/29/2024
William Martin Rohrig, 75, passed away peacefully in San Francisco on August 29th, 2024. He was surrounded by family and friends, and spent his final moments listening to music that he loved.
Bill was born on May 28th, 1949 and grew up in Whittier, CA with his parents Martin and Marie Rohrig, and sister Marilyn. He attended Whittier High School where he excelled in swimming, and was encouraged to train for the Olympics.
He moved to the Bay Area to pursue a degree in English literature at Sonoma State University, then settled in North Beach while continuing his studies at San Francisco State University. When not in class, he could often be found at Vesuvio Cafe.
Bill was a longtime member of the Yellow Cab Cooperative, and owned his own medallion before retiring. He proudly never had an accident in over three decades on the road.
An avid consumer of the arts, his taste was eclectic, ranging from classic literature to mystery novels, folk music to girl groups, Groucho Marx to summer blockbusters - always accompanied with the large bucket of popcorn.
He enjoyed playing chess, golf, discussing politics, and watching all types of sports, namely his hometown Giants and 49ers.
Bill is survived by his two daughters Kate (Anthony) Muzzatti and Wynne Rohrig, grandchildren Ansel and Amalia Muzzatti, sister Marilyn (Brandt) McCabe, and former wife Patricia Gallagher, mother to his children.
Heartfelt thanks to his lifelong friend Peter Tracy, and to Reba, Enver, and his entire hospice team at By the Bay Health for their support in his final months.
Bill will be remembered for his clever sense of humor, easygoing nature, and generous spirit. He was a devoted father, loving brother, and faithful friend. In his final altruistic act, he graciously donated his body to UCSF for medical research.
Rest in Peace, Bill. The song is ended, but the melody lingers on.

Bill was a dear friend. Our families would often get together for impromptu barbeques and parties and our children were like siblings. We remember him as a very kind man who loved his family.
We give our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
