Suscha, Joseph "Joey"

Joseph "Joey" Suscha age 89, of Sheboygan, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2013 at Terrace Estates.

Joey was born on February 28, 1924 in Sheboygan a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Fale) Suscha. He attended Ss. Cyril and Methodius Catholic School and graduated from Central High School in 1941. He entered the Army on March 22, 1943 and served in Company M of the 22nd Infantry Regiment of the 4th Division as a second gunner in a mortar platoon and at times as a radio man with a forward observer. He served in four major battle campaigns, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, 4 Campaign Medal, the Presidential Unit Citizen, Combat infantry Badge and Expert Rifleman Medal. For wounds received in action on the Siegfried Line he received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Joey was united in marriage to Joyce Vincent on April 30, 1949.

Upon his return from the service he and his brother-in-law, Stanley Badtke, bought the family's business, Suscha's Tavern. In 1953 when his brother, Stanley, returned from Korea he joined the business, it became incorporated and the name was changed to Suscha's Super Bar. In 1968 the name was changed to Suscha's Coho Headquarters and they became very active and influential in the salmon and trout fishing program on Lake Michigan. He retired from the business after 53 years. In retirement he and his wife Joyce traveled extensively to several countries, many islands in the Caribbean as well as three or four annual trips to Las Vegas.

Joey was a lifelong member of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the VFW Post 9156 and the Ball and Chain Club.

Joey is survived by his wife, Joyce; a son, Joseph (Gail) Suscha, Jr. of Lebanon, IN; two granddaughters, Laura (Jason) Wolff of West Virginia and Emily Suscha of Indianapolis, IN; two great grandsons, Carson and Zachary Wolff; a brother Stanley (Marilyn) Suscha of Sheboygan and two sisters, Mary Badtke of Suamico and Virginia Weinberger of Arvada, CO. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sandra Lee, a brother, Anton and a sister Christine Frank.

A Liturgy of the Word will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 28 at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with Rev. Richard Cerpich officiating. Burial will follow in Greendale Cemetery with military rites accorded by VFW Post 9156. Family and friends may gather at the church, 822 New Jersey Ave. on Thursday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.

Memorials in Joey's name may be directed to Ss. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church.

Joey's family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the staff of Terrace Estates and St. Nicholas Hospital Hospice along with Dr. Bettag for all their care and compassion.
