Gary Kendrick Obituary

BREVARD - Gary Kendrick, 66, died peacefully on Saturday June 2 at Mission Hospital in Asheville following a tragic accident.

He was surrounded by his family at the time of his death.

Gary was born May 5, 1952 in Shelby, North Carolina to Edwin and Juanita (Glance) Kendrick. He was a 1970 graduate of Aiken High School. Gary went on to graduate from the University of South Carolina in 1973 with a degree in Computer Science. He later received a Master of Divinity from Candler School of Theology at Emory University. On December 29, 1973, Gary married Betty Bouknight. Together, they had one daughter, Kristin. Gary spent his career in the technology industry as an educator, sales representative and small business owner.

Gary and Betty enjoyed traveling the world together as well as spending time with family and friends. Gary truly brought laughter and joy to everyone who knew him. He could captivate a room with an entertaining story or even a really good joke. Gary was genuinely appreciative of the many blessings in his life and recognized tremendous joy in helping others; this led him to truly enjoy each day and to have a long line of friends and family who simply loved being around him.

Gary and Betty retired to Brevard where they both became actively involved in the Unitarian Universalists of Transylvania County, the Big Hill Community, and the city of Brevard. Throughout his life Gary enjoyed riding the Blue Ridge Parkway on his motorcycle, turning wood in his workshop, trout fishing in Western North Carolina, driving his Bob Cat in the neighborhood, traveling Europe with his family, visiting his grandchildren in California and walking his dog, Bella, with Betty.

He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 45 years, Betty; daughter, Kristin Wolfe (Chris); and two grandchildren, Molly and Weston, who lost their "GDada." Gary is also survived by his father, Edwin Kendrick of Shelby; brother, Ron Kendrick (Vicki) and their family; brothers-in-law, Lon Bouknight (Deborah), Frank Bouknight (Lela), James Bouknight (Ramsey) and their families. Gary was truly a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, friend and neighbor and will be sorely missed.

A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, June 10 at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalists of Transylvania County at 24 Varsity Street at Broad in Brevard, NC 28712.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Gary's name to Unitarian Universalists of Transylvania County Varsity Fund.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. Joy and I just met Gary in March 2018, while looking at real estate in Big Hill. A very nice man, very sincere.
