Joseph Costner Obituary
Joseph "Joey" Wheeler Costner III, 69, entered fully into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Friday, Aug. 18, 2017, at his home in Shelby, following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Joey was born Nov. 7, 1947, to the late Joseph Wheeler Costner Jr. and Mary Lee Brooks Costner. Joey taught elementary and middle school for 32 years in Rutherford County Schools and Shelby City Schools. He also served as part-time minister of music in eight churches in Rutherford and Cleveland counties. He served as full-time minister of music/senior adult ministry. He filled an interim in Nashville, Tenn., and helped to plant a church in East Nashville. He led many to find life in Christ.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 43 years, Patsy Scruggs Costner; a son, Matthew J. Costner and wife, Alyson of Black Mountain; and three grandchildren, Maxwell, Ellery and Lois. One sister, Ann Costner Freeman of Spindale; one brother Larry Costner and wife, Gayle of Mooresboro; and his beloved father-in-law and mother-in-law Irvin and Waynett Scruggs. Joey will also be remembered by his numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.
A great thank you to Hospice of Cleveland County for their loving care and support. Also, a thank you to Cecil Burton Funeral Home for all the arrangements.
A celebration of Joey's life will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, at Putnam Baptist Church, 1146 County Home Road, Shelby, with Rev. Bryan Glisson and Dr. Matthew Costner officiating.
Receiving of friends will immediately follow the service. The family will accept visitors at the home in Shelby.
Burial will be held privately.
Flowers are welcome, or in lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County 951 Wendover Heights Dr., Shelby, NC 28150, or Hands On Mission 1305 N Post Road, Shelby, NC 28150.

Patsy, Matthew and Family. I am sorry for Joeys struggle with cancer but he's home with his Savior. He was such a wonderful man. He encouraged me to enter into music ministry and I am thankful for his kind words of encouragement. I will continue to remember you all.
