Sonny Huggins Obituary

SONNY HUGGINS
DEC. 5, 1937 - APRIL 17, 2011

SHELBY - James Reid (Sonny) Huggins, 73, passed away on Sunday, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Sonny enjoyed life to the fullest. He enjoyed his family, his church, his community and had a wonderful outlook on life. He taught his children many life lessons by his example of being a wonderful Christian servant, husband and father.
He was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church, a deacon and a member of the Larry Sale Sunday School Class. Sonny worked tirelessly at the church, as taught by his father, in caring for the church building. He was a volunteer at the Snack Shop, a faithful club member at Ronald Humphries Quick Stop where many community problems were solved, a trustee at Gardner Webb University and a member of the Cleveland County Education Foundation. Sonny loved and believed in being involved in his community and passed this love of others to his children, grandchildren and all of those whose lives he touched. He made homemade ice cream and distributed it to many in Boiling Springs. Sonny was an avid fisherman. Awesome stories are told about the many fishing trips with his friends and his son, Paul.
He graduated from Boiling Springs High School and Gardner Webb College. Sonny enjoyed seeing the growth and beauty of the Gardner Webb campus. Sonny served his country in the Army National Guard. He worked at Sears in Shelby for over thirty-five years and retired as Manager.
Sonny was born on December 5, 1937 to James Dwyre and Agnes Bridges Huggins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Virginia (Gin) Huggins Gault, his father and mother-in-law, Maxwell B. and Ruth Putnam Hamrick, a nephew Matthew Timmons Hamrick, and a great nephew Jordin Timothy Hamrick.
Sonny is survived by his wife of over fifty years, Teresa Hamrick Huggins, daughter Julie Daves and husband Bill, son Paul Huggins and wife Terri, daughter Catherine Hastings and husband Donny. Sonny adored his grandchildren, Ashley Daves, Catie Daves, Laura Daves, Margaret Huggins, Tripp Hastings, Morgan Sheely, Connor Huggins, Alex Hastings and Hailey Sheely, great grandchildren, Becca Champion, Maggie Champion and Grady Nodine. He was also survived by brothers-in-law Bill Gault, Buddy Hamrick and wife Jennifer, Fred Hamrick and wife Nancy and nephews Jim Gault and wife Karen, Rob Gault and wife Cheryl, Charlie Hamrick and wife Kristin, Bly Hamrick and wife Anna and great-nephew Jacob Hamrick.

He always had time to stop and talk and was always seen with a smile on his face. It was a blessing to have got to know him

Dear Teresa, Julie, Paul and Catherine, Frances and I will always remember the special way Sonny made us feel in our days among us as pastor. He honored us by being on the search committee as well as "servicing the sale" by encouraging my family as he befriended us. We will always remember him, his smile and his Christian life. Love, Buddy Corbin

Paul, Teresa, Julie, and Catherine, I am so saddened to hear of Sonny's death. He was an exemplary Christian, husband, and father. As you know, I worked many years at Sears in Shelby with Sonny, and his character and work ethic were admirable (he could, however, spin some fishing tales!). He will be missed not only by his family and friends, but by the larger Boiling Springs community. Many regards, Jerry Dycus, Southport, NC.

Teresa, Julie, Paul, Catherine and the rest of the family. Praying for you all during this time. Remember the GREAT man Sonny was -- husband, father, grandfather and friend. He has left a great legacy to you all and a strong Christian heritage. Cling to the memories you have. Memory is what God gives us that death cannot destroy. Sending lots of love and hugs to you all. Wish I were there. Am heart sore but rejoice in the knowledge that we will see Sonny again. Love and prayers, Bonnie
