Charles F. Zobel

1941 - 2022

Loving Husband and Father Charles (Chuck) Zobel, of Edison, NJ, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Brooklyn, NY on August 19, 1941, son of the late Rosemary and Charles Zobel, Chuck had resided in Great Kills, Staten Island (NY) for forty-seven years prior to moving to Edison, NJ in 2020. After graduating from Samuel J. Tilden High School in Brooklyn, NY, Chuck entered the United States Army and was stationed in Chicago, IL. It was there he met the love of his life, Pat. It was love at first sight and they married soon after they met in the Windy City. Upon completing his service in the US Army, Chuck and Pat returned to New York in 1962 where for more than 20 years, Chuck climbed the corporate ladder. Flow charts, capital assets and long-term losses were his daily concerns working at companies such as Continental Oil Company, Macmillan Inc., Gilman Paper Company, A. Johnson & Co., and Bear Stearns & Co. While working, he graduated magna cum laude from Pace University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting. "But the work failed to interest me. I really wanted to help people," recalled Chuck in an interview. So, at age 50, he traded in his briefcase and returned to school. He graduated from CUNY Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing (NY) with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1992. As a registered professional nurse, Chuck worked at Mount Sinai Hospital and cared for liver and kidney transplant patients for many years. Before he retired from nursing, he had most recently worked at Staten Island University Hospital. Quiet by nature, Chuck let others do the talking but always added a pertinent comment, an anecdote, or a joke to break the tension. With Pat, he enjoyed hosting holidays and parties for family and friends. The annual Zobel Christmas Party was not to be missed as were the themed parties with "The Gang from Brooklyn" including a Luau Night, Halloween Party, and Christmas in July. And yes, Chuck and Pat decorated their house for these themed parties, most likely to the chagrin of their neighbors. Chuck is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Patrick Moran; his brother, Richard Zobel; his sister, Eileen Grasso; his sister-in-law, Lori Javor; many nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Chuck was pre-deceased by his wife of fifty-five years, Pat, his beloved dogs, Smitty and Caelan; and his "one and only" granddog, Lucy. The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation for all the expressions of love that have been shown. Funeral services, handled by Flynn and Son in Metuchen, NJ, were private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Chuck's name may be made to the American Heart Association or to any charity devoted to the awareness and research of heart disease.
