Today is a sad day for me, as I just got this.
Tom was a "take the high road" character leader in the Fresh Kills landfill. He took a small corner area in his building and made it into a breakfast club of sorts. On any morning, you could walk in and get a cup of coffee and a roll or pastry for a small cost, he put his full effort in this. For a 20 year old kid to see this effort and be surrounded by people positively effected by him was amazing.
Later, as the landfill was closing, they made a job for him at the truck garage I too was working at. There was so much metalworking needed that he was justified to be there all the time.
If you read the obit, you know that he worked to erect the WTC. Well, I was with him, in that garage, not far from the Staten Island ferry, on 9/11/01.
Wanna see a fully tenured leatherneck break down and cry? I did. It compounded my anger and dismay that day.
Later on as he slowed down, I would return the favors as I would help him as much as I could in the workday.
I'll never forget Tommy Woodford.
