Florence (Flo) Ramona Rienstra Hunter, 93, was born September 14, 1932, to Andrew and Lena Rienstra in Worthington, Minnesota. Flo passed away on September 30, 2025, surrounded by her immediate family.
Flo graduated in 1950 from Worthington High School. She then attended Northwestern College, Orange City and graduated from Morningside College, Sioux City. She then taught for over 50 years at George Community School, George Iowa and Holy Trinity Catholic School in Des Moines, Iowa. She was a favorite teacher of many of her students, making even math fun. She was honored with the Golden Apple Award for 2008-09 by WHO-Channel 13.
She was a dedicated community leader that fiercely believed in the spirit of giving back, especially for children. Flo will be remembered for her work on the Windsor Heights Foundation Special Events Committee. She provided leadership for the annual 4th of July parade and celebration, Movies in the Park, Ice Skating in the Park, Oktoberfest, the Watershed Festival, Children's Bike Parade, Pancake Breakfast, Easter Egg Hunt (appearing as the Easter Bunny), Breakfast with Santa (appearing as Mrs. Claus), Music in the Park and Ice Cream Socials at her home. She represented the Windsor Heights Fire Department as Siren T. Clown with her own mini firetruck that she drove through parades. She even attended Clown School in Baraboo, Wisconsin.
She volunteered for the Windsor Heights Fire Department and served as an EMT/Paramedic. Flo was a long-time member of the Lions Club.
She was honored with Citizen of the Year 2010 for Windsor Heights and in 2022 as Grand Marshal of the Windsor Heights Fall Parade. In 2019 the Windsor Heights Foundation dedicated the Flo and Al Hunter Harmony Park, in Colby Park in their honor.
Flo served on the Windsor Heights City Council from January 1, 2006 - December 31, 2009.
Flo is survived by her children, Jeff Reinders (Dee), Sioux City, Tim Reinders (LuAnn), Des Moines and Todd Reinders, Windsor Heights; her grandchildren Christine Reinders Caron (Jeremy), Des Moines, Stephanie Pick (Sam) Ankeny, Caitlyn Reinders, Des Moines, Travis Reinders, Los Angeles and Henry Reinders, Des Moines; and her great-grandchildren, Mina Caron and June Pick. She was preceded in death by her parents Andrew and Lena Rienstra, husband Gerard Reinders and husband Al Hunter.
A ceremony honoring the life of Flo, a beloved grandmother, teacher, first responder, clown, public servant and friend whose impact touched many will be held Friday October 10th at the Windsor Heights Community Center, 6900 School St, Windsor Heights, IA. We welcome all who knew and admired Flo to attend a Celebration of Life Open House from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Windsor Heights Community Center, a time to gather, share memories, and reflect on the joy Flo brought to our lives. This informal gathering will be unstructured, allowing guests to come and go as they feel comfortable.
Memorial gifts will be directed to the Windsor Heights Foundation to help support their community events to carry on Florence's legacy.
