Michael L. Foister
Sioux City
I'm Michael Lee Foister. You gotta hear this. I'll be quick as I have to go help some people, so listen up.
My story began Oct. 27, 1979. You may know my parents, Terry Foister and Diane (Crum) Foister. They own Jerry's Pizza here in Morningside. I know...I know...you have all sorts of memories of events where Jerry's was served. Those stories will be heard in due time. These stories always remind me of my Grandpa Jerry and Grandma Ilene Foister and how hard they worked to make Jerry's what it is today.
That's not the point of this story though. It's not about Jerry's. Not today.
My older sister, T...sorry, Teri Lynn (Foister) Byler...have been hearing Jerry's stories from the get go. She lives out around Denver with her husband, Justen Byler, and their kids Logan and Maci, Amazing kids by the way. I look up to T so much. She's got it figured out. Proud of her.
Before I share the story, have you met my wife, Melissa "Missy" (Hagestrom) Foister? If not, you're missing out. You gotta meet her. I don't know how I landed that one. She's been my rock since '04. I can be a bit of a handful, ya know.
She always stood by my side no matter what. I love her so much and I am so lucky to have her. I'm getting to the story. Hang tight. You gotta know about my best friend first. Ashton Michael Foister is my son and my best buddy. I can be a kid at times...sometimes more than Ashton...ok...ok.. Always more than Ashton. We've had some good times. Playing ball, four-wheeling, building wicked fast remote controlled cars, and all the other craziness I dreamed up. I can't share the details as it may give kids some dangerous ideas. Ashton has been with me for them all. I may not always know the right "dad" thing to do, but I definitely know how to create stories and memories with my son. I haven't always done it right but I've nailed that part of being a dad. You know what...Ashton nailed that, too. I'm just now thinking...he probably did things with me for ME just as much as I did things with him for HIM. Thanks bud! Love you to the moon and back buddy!
I guess my dad taught me about the importance of making time for fun. That guy has taken me all over the world and always provided for me and my family. The laughs, stories and memories we have made are never ending. You're loud and slow but I love you old man.
Fun is important but only possible if responsibilities are taken care of. That's my mom. She's the quiet warrior that keeps it all going. All the stuff I don't have the patience for, she's helped with my entire life. I guess she's always helping. Never says much about it though. Just does it...no credit...sometimes no gratitude. Just because she loves. I haven't said it enough, mom, but thank you and I love ya.
There's so many more people I wish I had the time to talk about. You can meet them all soon. I have a little gathering at the Anderson Dance Pavilion this Friday, Sept. 25, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. You know the place…it's on Larsen Park Road by the river. Nothing fancy...I'm not one for dressing up. Bring a lawn chair and stories. We will have some food ready to rock. Sorry...no pizza though. I don't want my parents to have to work...just enjoy the day. Oh yeah...bring that mask. I hate those things too but I'll be ticked if my family and friends get sick!
I won't be able to make it but I'll be there in spirit. You see, I moved to a garage in the sky on Sunday, September 20th at 5:30pm. You wouldn't believe how many cars are up here to jack around on! Suzuki Samurais and Geo Trackers as far as I can see. Sweetie jumped up in the front seat of the perfect one. That's right, Missy, I'm going through more cars here than I ever did at our place...unbelievable right?
Alright, where was I. The story, right.
I'm Michael Lee Foister. Wait...sorry...I have to go. Some people need my help. The story will have to wait for another time. In the meantime, make some stories yourself. Most of my stories involve my family, friends, having fun and helping others. If you focus on those things, you'll have a lot of stories too. I can't wait to hear them.
You know I'm not one for accepting gifts or flowers. So, instead of that my son Ashton loves golfing and The First Tee of Siouxland has been amazing for him. I'd love it if you supported them in my honor. Go to www.MichaelFoister.com to make a donation to their organization through The Just Play Foundation. Additionally, I'd love it if you shared some stories with my family there as well. There's a form you can fill out so the family will always be able to hear stories about me.

How did I meet Mikey? I was a month younger than him and met him IN THE AVE. Though I didn't know him well- he definitely made me aware of boys with JEEPS and the ummmm appeal they have! = I say this cautiously because the last time I saw Mikey was in 2018 at a Dollar Store. I was in front of him and he was in his phone talking. The cashier took what seemed like FOREVER. She asked me how Jesse and the kiddos were. Mike hung up and said Jesse LeGore?! And I told him I had just married Jesse in April. He was excited as he remembered seeing this on Facebook and gave me his thoughts of how great it was to finally see Jesse happy and with the woman he was meant to be with. He paid for my entire order- yes, yes, yes I tried to refuse but he wasn't having it and his cash worked for the cashier MUCH FASTER than my debit card! = I was dumbfounded by his kindness.
I went home and told Jesse. He asked me to describe the guy. I told him. OMG THAT'S MY BUDDY FOISTER I was just on the phone with him talking about our JEEP!
Whoa. So a guy I met that first started my taste for Jeeps- 20 years later is in the phone with my husband whom I also met in 1996/97 when I met Foister- while he saw me at the store and paid for my order?! I mentioned to Jesse that I knew Mike from the AVE and he just laughed.
Now... almost 3 years later our new Jeep breaks. Ya ya ya it's a Jeep thing- I know. So Saturday while Jesse helped his mom and dad (Mike and Becky post) put down their beautiful very aged horse- His dad asked if he had called Mikey yet- that he bet he would have the answer to such a strange problem. You see- after loads of research and looking- we haven't found the answer to the Jeeps mysterious break down.
Jesse came home and told me- he was going to call Mikey in a few days cuz he'd love this kind of challenge!
Sunday crept by and Money came. So I heard from the person who told us was a sentence too crappy to repeat but did inform us of Mike passing away. My heart sank and I felt like I might vomit.
Today- we went to his service. Big picture of that contagious goofy smile... I'm not afraid to admit my husband is heartbroken and cried. I saw many people- their masks hiding their sadness but unable to hide their heartbroken eyes.
My heart breaks for all of you. His family and his friends. Do you all realize that he didn't just touch your lives? You touched his and made it possible and LOVABLE for him to be- him! The way he was raised and the people around him- loving his goofiness encouraged him to just be himself!
He also touched a few people he never met! How??
At Walmart this last year I've watched people. Being very sick I see life a little more preciously than most. I've helped people. Mikey showed me that. The last lady was only a couple of weeks ago. Bless her she has 4 teenage boys. After seeing them from a couple lanes over- I saw that she didn't have enough money to pay. I also saw that she was a mother who took the time and energy to RAISE her kids- I've got in trouble and right there in Walmart she took his phone and grounded him- for a 16 year old boy that was a big punishment. What had he done? Used his moms card for 20 more than he told her. Leaving her short for her carefully picked order.
I went over, told her I wanted to pay for her entire order. She almost looked scared. I said look- I'm a mommy of 7 and I once had a guy just randomly pay for my order at a store. I tried to stop him from doing it but after I left I realize- WE NEED TO BE KIND TO EACH OTHER
With tears in her eyes she allowed me to pay. I asked her what HER favorite drink and treat were. Her son answered her and I asked if it was correct. She was in a daze and said yes. I had those teenage boys go get some for their mom. Because SHE deserves something extra.
So- from all of us who have been touched by the kindness of this sweet goofey guy

I moved from Sioux City about 10 years ago. We came back to town Wed night for a wedding this weekend. I had to order Jerry's and have it delivered to my Hotel because we weren't going to make it here before they closed. Jerry's is the one place that I miss the most, and have to get when i'm back home. I've Traveled extensively the last 10 years for work. I always try different local pizza places on my trips. I have yet, to find any that can top Jerrys! I decided I had to have it again today for Lunch, I'm working from my Hotel. So I called Westside Jerry's it closest to my Hotel. But no answer. Called again few minutes later no answer. Called the second line no Answer. So I decided I'd call morningside, I'd talk to Mike. Tell him I'd tip big if I could get someone to deliver here. I know he would do it for me No answer.. Weird,,,What..is going on I thought? I called my Buddy Josh, he used to work at Jerrys. Hey man did Jerry's quit serving lunch? Then he told me the sad news. I didn't know Mike well, but knew him a long time. When I was working in town in sales, I stopped at Jerry's in morningside once or twice a month. Would sit at the counter and Talk to Mike while he would make my pie and wait for it to get done. He was always pleasant and fun. I'm saddened by his passing. My deepest condolences!

Mikey, Mikey, Mikey....where to begin. I remember one night at dinner. I had made French dips that night and I watched you drink a bowl of au jus like a champ. And like I mean the whole bowl in one shot. He liked his lips and said dang that was good. Did I ever tell you french dips is one of my favorite foods. So the I offered him the sandwich to go with the au jus but of course he said nah nah I am good now. He would also bring over various stick shift cars for me to drive. For he knew how much I enjoyed driving a stick shift every now and again. He would literally hand me the keys and say here you go. Take er for a spin. Mikey was always happy and so much fun. I have memories of him.playing kind and seek with my daughter and all of her neighborhood friends. Mikey really did have an infectious personality and was so much fun to be around. Not one time did I ever see Mikey in a bad mood or without a smile. I will definitely try to improve myself with the above that Mikey left behind. Rest easy, speed fast and see you soon. God bless and prayers to everyone that knew Mikey, especially his family. Much love.

I'll never forget his stopping over to my son's house and it always seemed his attention was eventually turned to his son, my grandson. Yes, he really enjoyed bringing fun into a child's life. When we were at Jerry's one evening he took my grandson back into the kitchen and gave him a big 'ol wad of pizza dough to play with, a big chunk of cheese and a cup full of olives. Just having the pass into the kitchen was a huge highlight for him! I will always hold those pictures dear.
One night at the Roadhouse, when we were ready to leave and waiting for our check, the waitress advised the bill was already taken care of. What? I asked her by who and she quietly pointed to over the wall from where we were seated. Yep, Mikie had spotted us and picked up the tab. Always wanting to put a happy in someone's life. :
We will miss his smile and incredible energy. See you when we get there Mikie.

Mike was a blast to grow up with, which was ages ago. We went muddin' under the train bridge, snowmobiling, hanging out on the avenue, or crashing at his house. One takeaway I got from Mike was his giving spirit. He wanted people around him happy and made it happen.
Its sad to see him go so young. We are praying for the family as you go through this difficult time.
