VIRDEN - Dr. Andrew Mathias, 90, formerly of Hammond, Ind., died Nov. 6, 2007, at St. John's Hospital.
Andrew was born March 21, 1917, in Virden, the son of Victor and Mary Mathias.
Andrew was a 1935 graduate of Virden High School and during World War II he worked for the Department of Defense in Central and South America. Afterward, Andrew continued his education and became a chiropractic physician and practiced in Hammond, Ind., for more than 50 years, retiring in 1999.
Dr. Mathias was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Virden and enjoyed his favorite hobby of beekeeping. He gave his honey freely to many area residents.
Dr. Mathias is survived by a brother, Frank (wife, Mary) Mathias Sr. of Virden; sister, Velma M. Uricchio of Pittsburgh; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at the Calvert and Ferry Funeral Home in Virden. Funeral Mass will be Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Virden with the Rev. Father August J. Sperl officiating. Interment will be at the Virden Cemetery immediately following the Mass.

I was very, very saddened today to hear of the passing of Andrew. He was the kindest, cutest man with a warm smile to greet everyone he met. Anyone who had the priviledge of knowing this man, was truely blessed. You will be missed.

We've lost a true gentleman! Dr. Andrew always had a ready happy smile for us. His compassion for others was evident. He shared many fascinating stories about his life. He proudly shared his love for his family. We will all miss him much. We pray God's comfort for his family and friends.
