Dr. Spiegel and his exciting classes encouraged me to go to law school. I am very glad I did and have enjoyed the private practice of law since 1978. I LOVED his classes and that was usually not the case with other classes with other professors.

I am very grateful for Dr. Spiegel. He was without a doubt my favorite professor and greatly impacted my life. I was writing an entry into Storyworth that our daughter gave me that asks questions about my life that will be put into a book. The topic was about classes and I was mentioning his and came across his obituary.

I am glad he lived a long life. He always seemed very fit and active...and such a classy dresser.

I recently learned of Fred Speigel's passing. Dr. Speigel was my professor for Constitutional Law. He had high expectations of everyone. His classes demanded preparation and a strong work ethic. Dr. Spiegel was a wonderful teacher, I wish I could get his opinion on todays events impacting our Constitution. I worked my way through Mizzou at the Recorder of Deeds office with Barbara Spiegel. I have positive thoughts and memories of both and wish their families comfort.

I just learned of Dr. Spiegel's passing and although this saddened me to hear, I am glad he passed peacefully. I consider it an honor to have been one of his students in his course on the Constitution and Civil Rights. He had and incredibly sharp mind and I always looked forward to attending his class. I will always remember him for his great sense of humor and his ability to make us think. He was always impeccably dressed and I remember returning from Spring Break and he had a better suntan than any of his students! He truly was a great man and we are all a little poorer without men like him. Godspeed.

Dr Speigel was an inspiration to me and sent me on a journey as a lawyer and professor myself. He lectured inspiringly without notes and new his subjects so well. May his legacy continue.

Todd, Val, Tyler, and Barrett,
We are very sorry to hear about Freds passing. What a treasure he was! As neighbors, we enjoyed talking to Fred, watching him on his journey to Schnucks, listening to him play the organ/piano, and the aroma of his baking creations were wonderful! Your memories will always be in your hearts. Fred is free of pain and now joined with his wife and the Lord. You will all be together again.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

My sincere condolences on the loss of your father (parents) Todd. My memories of him in the relatively short time I knew him was that of a sartorially splendid man who always seemed to carry himself so very well. I know he was much more than that to you, and you will have those memories for a lifetime. Hope to cross paths with you in the future...Joe

What a fantastic human being! Dr. Spiegel served as my advisor through undergraduate and graduate schools. He was always available to discuss a problem that popped up. I always felt very fortunate to have taken his many classes in the political science department and later to have served as one of his graders. His classes were examples for many of us who went on to teach at the university level. After having taught for fifty years in a university classroom, I would like to thank him for being there for Missouri students.

Fred Spiegel was timeless. And an institution at the University of Missouri. At a time when I was struggling figuring out what I wanted to do with my life, my neighbors and friends Paul Wallace and Robin Remington (internationally known political scientists in their own right) suggested that maybe I was not cut out to be an engineer like my step-dad (a view he seconded), and that maybe I should broaden my career search. After a semester of liberal arts courses, that path ahead became more clear. Dr. Fred was one of the major influences of that period (along with the biology course where I met my future wife Julie). It was hard to tell how old Fred was when I first met him through Paul and Robin. His sartorial splendor, mentioned by others, was no joke - he looked the part of a constitutional lawyer. His lecture style was reputed to be - and was as I later learned - like that experienced in law school. My first exam with him resulted in a low grade. At Paul's suggestion, I went to talk to Fred. That conversation remains in my mind as one of the most formative discussions I have ever had in my life. Fred was direct. His question "Who do you want to be?" still resonates in my mind today, more than 40 years later. Under his tutelage, I became a better student. He suggested I take other instructor's courses (in addition to my decision to take every course he taught in the Poli Sci Dept.). As a result, I learned from Greg Casey, Marvin Rogers, in Poli Sci, and Kuhlman in Economics, Wiecek and Purcell in (Legal) History. I found a home, and I learned from the best. By the time I graduated, I was getting A's - not just in his courses, but in the others as well. Fred did this for others, my experience was not unique. This is attested to here and elsewhere by others - jurists, lawyers, city councilpersons, former students all. Fred knew his subject and could teach it. In law school, my constitutional law instructor in Iowa paid Fred the highest compliment. He asked whether my father was a lawyer, or my grandfather; and upon hearing that neither had been, he asked where I went to undergraduate school. When told I had gone to UMC and received a bachelor's in Poli Sci there, he responded "Ah, so you were one of Spiegel's students; that explains it". Yes, yes it does. That reputation was earned. Thank you Dr. Fred for all you have done for me, for so many other students, for our State of Missouri, and for our rule of law. You will always be remembered fondly.

I truly adored both Fred and Barb......what a genuine couple. I always looked forward to their dental visits which were more like catching up visits, I was their dental hygienist for many years. When Barb passed , Fred showed up with one of the turtles Barb collected as a remembrance for me and it is one of my special treasures! Fred was always dressed to the T a true Mr GQ with such a kind heart , great stories ( I feel I know Todd personally ) and a smile to brighten anyones day! RIP Fred, know your spirit is happy to be with Barbs!

Among the true highlights of my service on the Missouri Supreme Court were the times that I spent with Fred teaching law to high school teachers with Millie Aulbur of the MO Bar. Fred had a truly extraordinary memory, a great sense of humor and a true rapport with his audience and colleagues. He was the best. I met him when the MO Bar invited him to lecture on Marbury v. Madison in a plenary session of the Bar annual meeting years ago. The room was packed and Fred spoke without notes for more than an hour, and every lawyer in that room learned something important about the foundations of our American legal system. My condolences to Fred's family. We all were blessed with his long life; I know you will miss him greatly.

To Todd and Valerie and the entire Spiegel family -

We are so sorry to hear that Fred has passed away. I (Scot) met Dr. Spiegel my junior year of college when I took his Judicial Process class. One of the things he taught us in was the Missouri Plan, its history, and how it worked. I have been a supporter of the Missouri Plan ever since. He was an exemplary student of the law and the judicial process and made others want to be as well. After taking the class, I thought it should have been a requirement for everyone who matriculated at Mizzou.

And another thing he taught us was how to dress. Few could match him in his sartorial resplendence.

What a loss. And what a gift he was. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

Prof. Spiegel was my constitutional law Professor at MU, backed in the early 1980's, a class I took before starting MU Law School. He was delightful, knowledgeable, thoughtful, principled and entertaining, a wonderful human being. It is good to see he led a long and full life. (I later went on to lead the effort to Save Stephens Lake and Pass the first Parks Tax in Columbia in 2000. I also later served on the City Council for 9 years.) He positively influenced many people through his life. Thankful to have known him.
