VIRDEN - Gerald W. Berg, 82, formerly of Hillview, Carlinville and Jacksonville, IL passed away Sunday afternoon March 8, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.
He was born on August 5, 1926, in Hillview, IL to Nancy & Andrew Berg. He graduated from White Hall High School in 1944. Gerald and the former Shirley J. Schroeder were married in White Hall on February 21, 1948.
Gerald farmed for 12 years in Hillview, IL and then began a 25-year career with General Telephone Company where he was a General Manager in Virden, Highland and Carlinville and also worked in Jacksonville, IL. He retired from General Telephone Company in 1985. Gerald was a member of Greene County and Sangamon County Farm Bureau, Masonic Lodge and Grace Southern Baptist Church in Virden, IL.
His mother, father and stepfather, James E. Barnett, preceded Gerald in death.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Shirley of Virden, IL; daughter, Deborah J. (Fred) Lambeth of Griggsville, IL; son, Steven W. (Inez) Berg of Springfield, IL; sister, Patsy J. McClenning of King City, CA and granddaughters, Abra of Chicago and Savannah of Springfield.
Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. Friday March 13, 2009, at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden, IL. Funeral Service will be at 10:30 A.M. Sat. March 14, 2009, at the Grace Southern Baptist Church in Virden, IL with visitation one hour prior to service time with Mr. Steve Ford officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Southern Baptist Church, 302 W. Wright, Virden, IL. Interment will be in the Virden Cemetery.

Steve, Inez, Savannah, Abra, Shirley and Debbie: Please accept our deepest sympathy in the loss of your beloved father, father-in-law,grandfather, husband,and friend, that Gerald was to all of you. I know you have all been through so much and I feel so badly that we were not there for you in your time of need. I missed not seeing the announcement in our local paper. Please forgive me.
