Julian "Shucks" James Santarelli
RIVERTON - Julian "Shucks" James Santarelli, 92, of Riverton, died at 2:50 am Thursday, October 6, 2011 at St. John's Hospice. He was born July 8, 1919 in Springfield, Illinois to John and Nunzia Matarelli Santarelli. He married Eula Mae Haynes on September 20, 1952 and she preceded him in death on September 28, 2002.
Also preceding him in death were his parents; one son Leroy Santarelli; one step-son, Steven Earl Lindsey; two brothers, Frank & Larry Santarelli; two sisters Livia Pescetlli and Mary Stalmah and two infant siblings.
Survivors include two sons, Marty and Ed Santarelli both of Riverton and one grandchild, Ryan Santarelli.
Mr. Santarelli was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Riverton. He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran and was an Ex-POW and Purple Heart Recipient. He was an avid gardener and big sports fan and especially enjoyed watching the Cubs and the Illini.
He retired from Sangamon Electric after 35 years working in the warehouse and sheet metal department. He also worked for Riverton School District as a custodian for eight years.
Visitation: 8:30-10 am, Monday, October 10, 2011 at St. James Church in Riverton
Funeral Mass: 10 am, Monday, October 10, 2011 at St. James Church in Riverton, with Reverend Joseph Ring officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
Memorial Contributions may be made to The Animal Protective League or to St. James Church.

I only knew Shucks a short time at the Regency. But it was long enough to know what a good man he was. I listen to his stories about his life with his wife and kids and I could tell he had kind heart and loved his friends, and family. My sympathy goes out to his loved ones. His memories will live on in your hearts.
