HILLSBORO - Robert John Bandor, 61, of Hillsboro, formerly of Springfield, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at his residence.
Bob was born in Hillsboro, the son of Robert James and Jeannie Jachino Bandor, on Sept. 30, 1946. His parents preceded him in death.
Bob also was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynn Marie Bandor; and an infant brother, Peter J. Bandor.
Bob graduated from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. Bob served his country in the Vietnam War and received a Bronze Star. Bob also was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.
In his glory years of high school, Bob played baseball for the Griffin High School Cyclones. In 1963, Bob was selected to play on the Illinois State Register's All-City Team. He also played on the 1964 baseball team that won the IHSA State Tournament -- it is believed to be the first year that a parochial school had ever won a state championship in any sport. His love of the sport never waned as he spent the next 40 years devoting a great deal of time coaching and passing on his love of the game. He coached baseball for Fairview Youth Athletic Association, Ursuline Academy and St. Patrick's Grade School. He also enjoyed volunteering his time to various groups, including the Boys & Girls Club.
Bob is survived by his children, Sandra (husband, Tim) Schenk of Oraville, Rebecca Rue of New Albany, Ind., and Christopher Bandor of Springfield; and four grandchildren, Nicole and Sydney Schenk, Jake Burns and Ashton Bandor. He also is survived by his fiancee, Jane Roseberry of Hillsboro; an uncle, Bill Bandor (wife, Betty) of Hillsboro; and several cousins.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2007, at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. Sixth St. Funeral ceremonies will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Boys & Girls Club of Springfield, 300 S. 15th St., Springfield, IL 62703; or to the charity of the donor's choice.

I was just thinking about Bob today. He was my coach on the Cellini Cubs in the Fairview league from 9-11 years old. Played with his son Chris. I am now coaching my son who turns 9 this spring and Bob was my biggest inspiration for coaching. He was the best and a joy to be around.

I knew Bob a little bit from his days as a part-time sportswriter for The State Journal-Register. He really enjoyed covering the Springfield Kings hockey team. But I remember him even more when he was coaching the Ursuline Academy baseball team. His enthusiasm was contagious. You really could tell he cared about the kids. He'll certainly be missed by everyone in the central Illinois sports community.

If it wasn't for Bob's great slide forcing a catcher to drop a tag play at home plate during the regionals, there would not have been a Griffin High State baseball championship in 1964. Whenever I talk about the cliff hanger boys of 64 his name is at the top of the list. Although it's been years since I have talked with him my thoughts will always be there of his great efforts on the ball field. God bless you Bob, you were to young to leave us.

I first knew Bob as a member of the 1964 Griffin Cyclone Baseball team - what an impressive person and player! Through the years Bob found time to check in on my parents, Vince and Nadine Moore, and was always concerned with how everyone was doing. I know my parents and I thought a lot of Bob and I know he will be greatly missed by his family and friends, he touched so many lives. Know that our thoughts and prayers are with you, and keep all the wonderful memories close to your hearts.

Bob was not only a co-worker, but also a good friend. He won the hearts of my children by paying attention to them when I was working on the weekends and by always making an effort to come to a couple of their soccer/baseball games. He always was concerned with how we were all doing and never had an unkind word to say about anyone. He will be missed.

When you talk about Bob Bandor - you talk about friend - one in the same. Bob would do anything for anybody - he was a true friend. Bob would do anything for anybody before considering himself. Bob always was concerned about how the kids were doing. Bob loved sports and he always more concerned about how everyone in the sports arena was doing before he thought about the life arena. To Bob's family- I loved him and all around him loved him - You should be proud of his legacy.

We met Bob through the Fairview Youth baseball league when our sons Brian and Todd played baseball with his son Chris. Bob became an instant friend and always took time to chat with our family. He always had a smile on his face and seemed to really enjoy being around people and watch his son play ball. We want Chris and his family to know that we are thinking about them and to know how saddened we are to hear of their loss. Bob was liked by everyone that knew him, including our family, Rich and Linda Skeeters and Don and Joyce Sanvi

I grew up in the same Blessed Sacrament neighborhood as Bob. He was older than I was, but I can still remember playing sandlot sports with him. He was always nice to me and I will miss our occasional meetings.
